This is the issue I had and fix for it with my frunk.
Right! The motors lift the frunk lid, but the struts offset the weight. If the struts are weak, the motors might lack sufficient torque to pop the striker from the latch.

Pneumatic struts get weaker in the cold. In BTTF, Marty kept hitting his head on the sagging DeLorean doors because they had sprayed the car with liquid nitrogen lol. My DeLorean doors open slowly in the winter, but take two hands to close in the summer hahahaha

The bump-stops might perform a similar function by having a "springback" effect, but they exist to get the frunk lid flush and snug.

I had the same issue, took it in twice, and the issue came back, the third time the guy was just like “it’s an alignment issue with the latch, fixed it in about an hour with some other thing, and haven’t had an issue since.

Here is a video of mine doing it, captured it for when I make a service appointment. Was annoying to capture cause I had to start recording everytime i wanted to open the frunk until it finally did it.

My Cybertruck had a problem with the frunk closing. The frunk would go to close and then the vehicle would make a chime and then the frunk would open. The Mobile Ranger service technician figured out (after changing the latch mechanism with no fix) it was the opening in the plastic for the metal latch loop on the bottom of the hood that it was hitting on. This might be causing an opening issue for you instead of a closing issue for me. Look to see if your plastic opening has a mark like mine did and it just needs a little filing to remove a little of the plastic to make the opening a little bigger. Hope it helps.

I like the lithium grease idea. Any specific brand recommendation?

As far as the weather, I live in the south. It does get cold on occasion but I’ve also had it happen on 90+ degree days.

I do “timestamp” every time it happens and send it to my service advisor.
I just started having this issue after the frunk had been unused for some months and was going to try the WD40 Lithium spray I use on my 13-year-old Model S frunk if it happens agan.

Tesla service did the latch alignment the first time. Second time adjusted the two frunk screws at top. I find that the more screwed upward they are the least amount of frunk binding occurs. It also happens more in the cold. Frunk binds the first time of the day every 24 hours in winter.

Next winter I’ll try lithium grease on the latch.

I have the same problem. I don’t open my frunk very often but every time it had been a while it would do it. If I tried to duplicate it, take a video and show the service center. I was unable to duplicate. Now I’m past my 50,000 miles so I guess I’ll have to deal with it.

Have you requested a buy back from Tesla?

Mine has been doing this as well. I figured it was some new safety software thing that was implemented. Because it will open up, it just doesn't do it as smoothly as it used to. It pops up then pauses then after a second or two it will fully open.

Mine was getting stuck sometimes, probably because I don’t use it very often, so I put some lithium grease down in the latch. It definitely made a difference and now it doesn’t get stuck anymore. I ran it open and closed several times to work the grease in and also kept cleaning off the excess as needed.

Have the same problem does the grease still work can you provide a link?

Thanks!

Mine has been doing this since last summer.

1st trip to the SC and they couldn't replicate it.

2nd trip, I documented the date and time of the instances, and the technicians were able to confirm the problem. They replaced the latch, and the issue went away for about 10 weeks.

It's now been about 10 weeks since the latch was replaced, and it's happened 8 times since.

I use the frunk multiple times a week, but I've noticed that the issue happens when I go a few days between using it. I'm gonna put in a 3rd ticket for it.

And it's not due to the cold, I'm in SoCal, and there isn't a winter here lol.

You should consider adjusting the frunk bump-stops:

In my frunk, they were bottomed-out, and clearly were not making contact. I adjusted them outward, and now I can see and hear the frunk latch pulling tightly against them when closing. I imagine this provides tension to help release the latch when opening.

The hexagonal outer of the bump-stops rotates the whole assembly, and a CCW twist (90º I think) frees it for removal.

The round inner also rotates CCW to loosen, CW to tighten. Loosen the inner and then push/pull to adjust before re-tightening. I couldn't find any specific guidance for adjusting these in the Manual nor Service Guide, so feel free to experiment.

These are in the Smuggler's Bay, too.
will try this! I sporadically have this same issue with my frunk not closing all the way weird thing is it will eventually work if i use the phone app to close it but not directly from the main screen. So weird!
