Snip <There's nothing wrong with regular mirrors (especially when supplemented by well-placed cameras), except for the aero-drag penalty.>

I disagree. I have an FJ Cruiser and it’s been great to me with 250K accident free miles. BUT I’m convinced it’s just a matter of time until I hit a pedestrian or pull out in front of a bicycle because the side view view mirrors are so tall they block my view of the crosswalks and traffic that is “almost there”. Sure, I try to move my head around and ensure it’s clear but all it takes is a bit of inattention or rushing and it might bite me.

Driving on SoCal freeways, I feel it is just a matter of time before you will rear end somebody due to the car in front of you slamming on their brakes during your quick head turn to check your blind spot. Even if it is safe 99.999% of the time, if your daily work commute is 3 hrs/day then sometime in your work career you will have a bad day using that “safe” technique.

I have seen people complain about the lack of a blind spot detector in their Tesla and it turns out it is dependent upon what level of autopilot you have. My wife’s Model Y with FSD shows any traffic in bright red on the display if you signal to change a lane and the computer deems any traffic alongside or coming up behind you to be a factor. It’s amazing how it knows overtaking rate much faster than a person could judge with a glance. It’s safer to glance at the display and change lanes if there’s no red than to look over your shoulder. But if I rent the same model from Hertz, the same kind of traffic remains just grey symbols! So, based on my personal experience, FSD is safer even if you’re just driving manually.

PLEASE give me my CT with FSD and no mirrors!

The only issue I have with replacing mirrors with cameras is that mirrors show a 3D image while screens are 2D. There is a lot of information and detail lost in an image vs a mirror.

Mirrors are rarely large enough to show (and have recognition) of a 3d image.

Do we like Google Maps or do we still prefer using the book.

Once we transition to Video, we can option to see
Bird View
2D or 3D
High, Low res
AI enhanced
B&W
Anything the AI deems noteworthy could be highlighted in RED

Or simply 'Mirror Mode' ..... Would be like Amiga 500 emulator on your PC today.

Should make it much easier and safer than any mirror... even a clean mirror

That has not been my experience.
Most people think they're detecting relative position through parallax when in fact their brains are editing in that data from size and occlusion cues.

Try catching a baseball while looking through a side mirror and get back to me on that.

I can easily compare my current rear view mirror with the backup camera to see the vast differences in 3D vs. 2D images. No baseball necessary. ;)

That's what I call 'unwilling to put their thesis to the test'.

-Crissa
A thesis that has no merit and has repeatedly been proven false has no need of further testing.

I won’t be hauling a trailer. Nevertheless, my Cybertruck will have the left side with a small mirror and a large mirror on the right side for my wife to fix her hair.

Cameras are definitely cheap enough now. So are displays. My daughter drives a Toyota Yaris... Used, and about the cheapest thing around here. It's cheap when we bought it for her 5 years ago but she's been payment-free for 3 years now. ANYWAY, 3 years ago, I saw a cheap backup camera/monitor setup on Amazon for, like $19.95. It was really cheap but I figured it'd be worth a shot because she really wanted a backup camera for when she backs into her garage at her apartment complex. The camera worked fine and the display crisp enough. Here it is 3 years later and her only complaint is that it doesn't stick to her dash as well as it once did and it falls off sometimes.

Not ideal but wanted to throw this up here as a real-world case to show cameras are cheap and reliable enough. Though, to be fair, it's only on when her car is in reverse...
Talk to your politicians and tell them to get rid of the stupid mirrors and be like Europe.

Yes. This is the process. I suppose you could also email individual senators or representatives but the process they use to study safety issues for vehicles lies in the NHTSA. Petitioning the NHTSA is probably the best way.
