While the Wall Connector is in the realm of an experienced DIYer, the Gateway requires modifing the main electrical service including pulling the meter. Tesla only ships Gateways to its approved installer.

Even if you were able to get your hands on a gateway, Tesla controls the software and you couldn't use it anyways for home back up.
