Have my $59k truck coming sometime in September (hopefully). In the meantime I test drove a premium for about 3 hours the other day. One thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the delay in changing drive/reverse direction.

At one point I did a U turn at a light and it didn’t quite make it, so I had to go into reverse and then back into drive quickly to complete the turn as traffic was headed toward me. Honestly was not impressed how long this took. A real emergency scenario might have ended up in a collision.

Is there a trick to this that i am missing?

Using overhead controls is quicker than the screen for sure. But you have to train yourself to use that so it becomes muscle memory.

What???? In two years of owning one I've never been in a "oh shit", I cant shift "d to r to d to r" fast enough. First off, the turning radius rarely puts you in a situation where this kind of Austin Powers back in forth is necessary. I'm not even sure there is a delay in the first place.

My question is when will we get auto shift forward/reverse like the other models have? I actually liked it in my model s.

Thats the one thing that I miss the most from my M3. Even more than the adaptive matrix headlights.

I was honestly surprised too when it didn’t make the U turn. I was at full lock.
I’m sure there was a mixture of my confidence vs the vehicles capability.

was just honestly curious if there were any tricks or it’s just a matter of getting used to what the vehicle can do

It will shift into gear at the start of a drive, but other models will toggle between drive/reverse like when parking or doing a three point turn
Interesting, I guess I’m on LSD so much that I never knew. FSD, I mean FSD.

I believe you could switch from drive to reverse at 5 mph. When I pull up to my house, I throw it in reverse and back in the driveway, with no delay at all.

It is a nice addition. I bet we get it soon.

Smooth and fast shifting from reverse to drive for me in my Cybertruck when backing up then going forward using the screen controls. Never had an issue, problem, or a complaint. Works great. Works perfect. Way better than an ICE vehicle with old fashioned manuel gear shifter and a transmission in my opinion.

The overhead controls are faster once you train yourself. I don't even need to look any more

If you've never driven a full size SUV or truck, you need to go at least half way into the intersection before turning left in order to do a proper U-turn As far as swapping from D to R, it takes a bit of learning how to swipe up and down but you can actually do it before you've fully stopped. Possibly up to 5 mph like the other user stated.
