So the 16k bed extender is dead...

LONG LIVE the lower storage compartment extender!!!

Hear me out...according to Teslas own owners manual, the bed's lower storage compartment has the total of 97 liters of area, and a maximum weight capacity of 220lbs.
Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender Officially Cancelled! 1000010046

With that said, the current 4680 Tesla battery: "has dimensions of 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height. This translates to approximately 0.133 liters in volume." So with those numbers, in a direct transaction, equal a total space able to fit 729.32 batteries!

Now, of course that doesn't include fittings in spacing, cooling, and all the fun tech that goes into a battery pack...

So lets talk about weight. A single 4680 battery weighs 355 grams (0.78 pounds). So with that number (and the previous mentioned total capacity of 220lbs), the lower storage compartment could only support 282.05 batteries ? (plus all the weight of that battery pack stuff)

So... CONSERVATIVELY, we are somewhere between 200-600 additional batteries that could fit in the lower storage compartment. This would likely need to remove the current plastic container, and replace it with a reenforced structure to hold a battery compartment.

What that would mean for extra battery??
A single 4680 Tesla battery has a capacity of 5,500mAh...meaning 200-600 additional batteries could mean:
1. 200 batteries: 1,100,000mAh
kWh = (1,100,000 × 3.7) ÷ 1,000,000 = 4.07kWh
2. 600 batteries: 3,300,000mAh
kWh = (3,300,000 × 3.7) ÷ 1,000,000 = 12.21kWh!!
***"Documents submitted to the EPA by Tesla reveal that the AWD and Cyberbeast trims of the Cybertruck use a battery pack with a capacity of approximately 122.4 kW"

That means we could have a battery pack increase in capacity of roughly 3.3-9.9% increase.

Does that mean an increase in range of 3.3-9.9% (roughly 10-30 miles)??? Likely not, due to increased in weight, but who knows?? Please investigate Tesla and aftermarket vendors!!! Tesla has already does the work on making it possible to direct connect and additional battery pack "extender" and I for one would love to see some options in using this space!

Forgive any mistakes in my public math ?‍??

Not so much at a Supercharger, the extender would take up the extra capacity when the main pack charge curve limits power.
At home, yeah.

Did you have the vault open?
AWD at max GVWR would be 50-100 Wh/mile extra. So 320 mile range would drop to 255-285. If on cyber wheels at max GVWR, be sure to inflate to 65psi.
No I always drive with the vault closed.

Wes or someone from Tesla said that wasn't an option because of potential rear end crashes.

Probably a NHTSA standard to that would constrain Tesla but I think as an aftermarket accessory from a third party it wouldn’t apply.

Frunk would be better from a weight distributing point of view when towing along with double the allowable mass.
Terrible in a front end crash though.

The price would increase as well. There's almost no chance they are redesigning the CT to accommodate 500+ miles of range with current sales.
Correct.

I wonder how many folks bought the cybertruck only because of the added range?
I just bought the Cybertruck a few months ago (and sold my Rivian R1T Max Pack) because the extended pack would give it the range to tow 300 miles with my RV trailer (and for the free supercharging). Without the extended battery pack it is only about 200 miles with my RV trailer. That is a HUGE difference when towing around the country. Now I wish I kept my Rivian as it had more range in the max pack. I overpaid (as I could have bought a used Cybertruck with low miles) for a new 2024 Foundation Series, because of the Free Supercharging (it will take 3-5 years of supercharging to get it back the instant depreciation) and the extended packs ability to be the long 300 miles towing vehicle. This feels like a class action lawsuit in the makings as it is part of the order screen and promotion/decision to purchase the Cybertruck (false pretenses/advertising?). While there may not be a large number of buyers that want it, for those that did need it, they should still follow through with delivering the extended pack, even if they lose money! How can Telsa piss off the customers/owners that bought the flagship product of the future. I just lost $20k+ as now I have to sell and buy another EV with more range, ugh! Lesson learned and customer loyalty & trust forever burned. So now Elon is not only pissing of his past customers that made him the richest person in the world (mostly green focused democrats) but now his current & future ones!? Is the Tesla Board and Marketing Department falling asleep at the wheel? Or maybe they are all robots, now? Yep, I am pissed/disappointed/bummed and burned...

Right? I imagine the volume they sell will dramatically increase if people know the range is 500+ as originally promised.
as originally *estimated*
