The only other time I've seen those flairs sticking down was with the beta spotted at Palo Alto. Here's a comparison to the one at Moss Landing a while back.

Here's the one in Palo Alto:

ll the recent betas have these aero-deflectors in front of the wheels

On the crash test unit they had the lower bumper/trim pieces yanked to view the underside angles

Those are wheel force transducers attached to the steel wheels...

A wheel force transducer is a major constituent in modern vehicle development. It is a multiaxial precision measuring system – mostly a 6-component measuring system – that captures three forces and moments on a rotating wheel.
Wheel force transducers are designed for use in the development and testing of complete chassis and chassis components of different vehicles such as passenger cars, SUV, commercial vehicles, race cars and industrial vehicles. During measurement, a wheel force transducer replaces a standard wheel and measures the forces and moments acting on the tire contact patch."

Am I the only person here that noticed those AWFUL black fender flairs that stick way down past the rocker panel?

I have no idea what they're trying to do, but they would be awful for off-road use. AND they're UGLY!!!!
Do you mean the mudguards in front of the wheels? If so these are for aero, to stop the wheel rotation from disrupting airflow down the sides and creating turbulence and drag. A necessity because of the ride height that otherwise would expose to much wheel.

The Cybertruck spotted @ the Fremont factory on 4/6/23. Those are definitely strange rims. What do you think is going on here with all these wires taped up to it?

Update:

Attached to the steel wheels are Wheel Force Transducers, a multi-axial precision measuring system that captures three forces and moments on a rotating wheel.

Wheel force transducers are designed for use in the development and testing of complete chassis and chassis components of different vehicles such as passenger cars, SUV, commercial vehicles, race cars and industrial vehicles. Personally -- I hope they have a simple steel rim. Repairable. Cheap to replace if needed.

I really don't care what the wheel looks like.

My interests resolve around the diameter and width of the tire (dirt road capable), durability, cost to repair/replace -- maybe a nod to aero performance.

I'm in love with the stainless steel body so I don't have to worry about a stupid paint job. Give me wheels where I can apply the same sentiments.

My current GMC truck is 27 years old. I'm hoping the cybertruck lasts longer.

I really hope they aren't the standard rims. I took the wheel covers off my Model 3 because the actual rims are dope, so Im hoping for nice rims underneath the wheel covers on the Cybertruck
A concern for cosmetics: what if it's more aerodynamic (better range) with the wheel covers ON?

the covers are for reducing drag

because drag increases ~exponentially with speed, someone with 95% around-town driving wouldn’t be so impacted by removing the aero covers

Whereas, someone with a daily 50mi commute.

That said, the same effects of drag are true in ICE trucks, when people lift, level, increase tire size, etc., for aesthetic reasons.

Still, BEV trucks do have a way causing folks to think twice about mods

I , too , would love a stainless steel wheel... but I dont think that would be anywhere near economical to make
