I can see why faster charging is nice when needed but most people aren’t traveling hundreds of miles every day. It’s proven that slower charging prolongs battery life, right? I can see that if you are in a pinch or on a road trip you don’t want to sit around for 10 hours but typically charging overnight at 48 amps seems way more than sufficient
We will have 2 EVs by then so it would be nice if the CT didn't hog the ampersge all night.

I don’t know about you, but on most nights I don’t expect to need the charger for more than an hour or two to recover from 30-50 miles of driving. For me anyhow, needing to charge both cars from 0-80% is going to be a truly rare thing. It means I likely drove both cars 200+ miles today and plan to drive both cars 200+ miles tomorrow.

I can’t say I’ve ever needed that.

That is surely true. Most days we only drive 50 miles in each vehicle, and for the Model 3 that isn't even 2 hours on the charger. I suppose that I'll be able to program the charging so that the cars charge atdifferent times. Tesla is still recommending that their cars remain plugged in when not in use so that could solve the problem.

I am hoping that the 4680 pack will charge faster and get closer to the same charge rate as the Model 3. I am welcome to hope, right?

i hate to disappoint, but there isn’t a ton of throttling at wall charger speeds so while it might charge faster at the Supercharger, it won’t make a ton of difference at home.

I would wait. They recently released the gen 3 with a longer cable. Also, it would probably be a good idea to make your home ready to accept any EV charger not just a tesla.
Good idea but how do you make your home ready to accept any EV charger??

Just buy a Tesla wall connector and install it.

Best value, best features, and if you do need J1772 charging, there is a simple adaptor.

It is the one Tesla product which is not just the best, but the best price as well.

Have you watched the Munro Live video on this topic? It came out last month. You should probably have a separate sub panel installed with at least a 60 amp breaker. For some time now Tesla hasn’t allowed more than 48 amps for its wall connectors and the breaker has to be rated at 20% over the maximum current draw. I would recommend having an electrician that had installed a number of BEV chargers do the work as there is really nothing in a house that has a similar duty cycle.

Its pretty simple. You need to get wiring from the panel to the location you want the charger. You need to make sure your panel has capacity to cover that charger. Ideally 60 amps. You can look at your electrical bill and it should give you a peak demand. If you divide that by 120 volts that should tell you about the maximum amperage you are pulling through the panel at any given time. If you can fit an additional 60 amps on the panel then you are good. Following code, install a new breaker, and run a new circuit where you want your EV charger to go. You could also steel power from your electric 220V dryer if you are using a gas dryer. If you are using your dryer you could still steel power from it and just make sure to time your charging while the dryer is not running or you will start tripping your breaker. Your dryer is probably 30 amps or less. So it wont get the full power of the Wall Connector. If you are not comfortable doing electrical work you should have an electrician perform the work.

Tesla does make a charger now with the J1772 plug on it. If you know you are going to get a non tesla vehicle it may make more sense to just get that charger so you don't have to mess with an adapter.
Cool, I didn't know that. :)

Came out about 2 weeks ago. it is slightly more expensive. $550 vs. $400 for the Tesla plug. Here is the link: J1772 wall connector
Thanks for the link. Too bad it doesn't have two cords, 1 Tesla and 1 J1772. I guess you get to chose which is your main connector and still have to keep an adapter around to cover the other.

I’m perfectly happy with paying $400 for the Tesla version instead of $600 for a 2 headed beast.

Sometimes fewer features is a feature.
