Aside from the load of patent info dumped recently where solar for the tonneau was detailed, Elon has also mentioned some accessory solar “wings” that could be added for a total of 30-40 miles of range per day.

Most likely would these wings fold out from the sail pillars? Would you give up sail pillar storage for 30-40 miles of range or do you feel the 15 with the tonneau is enough (given that the wings can probably only be deployed while parked)?

100% would give it up! There’s already so much storage :)

would give up the storage but, depends on the added weight, net return and cost.

if I were camping a lot, I would have more interest. Since I am in a parking lot during the day, also need to know if cars can park beside me and deploy the wings.

basically, not enough information to make a decision. There is interest.

That’s a good point; it may not be that useful if you park in a lot much of the time. Even street parking, probably couldn’t be deployed.

In a camping situation, two deplorable awnings. Pretty cool to think about.

I also wonder what will Be the maximum deplorable wind rating.

I would be interested in a deplorable solar covering the front portion and roof.

“Deployable”?

Agreed: insufficient detail to decide. But cool idea!

I once had a deplorable awning, it was awful, all sun-beat. I took it down, and installed an admirable awning. It deploys in two minutes.

We really have to see what Tesla is going to offer, then I will look at how best to make it work for my application. peace

I would prefer some sort of option for an attachable panel rather than one that folds out.

Obviously this wouldn't really work while driving, I wouldn't want to use it while my truck is parked anywhere else that is away from home or a friends house since it could easily be damaged by a bad driver. So at that point I would be limited to while i'm at home and if it's not charging while i'm driving, or while at work, or running errands, I don't really have much use for it. If someone works from home or likes to stay home on weekends, this could be beneficial for them. As for myself, I usually only stay home on bad weather days, which also wouldn't benefit me for solar charging.

I also really like the storage in the sail pillars because it's not just additional storage to me but it's not storage that i'm commonly going in and out of. I might be alone on this but I really like to have my vehicles really organized; if I have something in my truck that stays in my truck, I like it to be out of the way. I would probably keep my frunk empty for groceries and other shopping bags, under the bed would be for cables and an emergency kit, the sails depending on their size could probably fit some basic tools, a tire repair kit, and other items I would like to keep with me on the road. The more storage available that isn't the bed lets me keep the bed free of small items that might roll around.

However, if Tesla added some way to plug in additional solar panels to work with the cover solar panels, I would consider it. You would keep the storage and be able to use the additional panels at home or take them with you while camping.

My biggest concern with the fold out is damage. I'm no expert in solar energy but i'm assuming to go from 15 to 30-40 you would need double or more than double the original surface area (the entire cover). so those would have to be some pretty big fold out wings. The bigger the wings, less force would need to be applied to the end to cause damage.

I'm thinking that efficiency could be improved with a simple reflector, like the ones used in photography:

These are light and collapsible, and could be deployed easily to maximize light onto the existing panels. But maybe not round lol

Yes and no. Solar panels often hit their peak production in mid-day not because the sun but because they're at their maximum ability to shed heat.

Turn those reflectors into collectors to power some Stirling engines...

15 mile per day would be sufficient for my current situation. Anything larger would have to be portable and affordable. I would like the truck to be flexible enough to use aftermarket external solar power sources.

I do not apologize for fat fingers and apple autocorrect!
Apple onscreen keyboard and auto correct has been driving me bananas. I can't spell to save my life. Never learned grammar and I have no idea how this thing manages to make things worse. This absolutely cancels everything Apple did right.

The delayed auto correct gets me all the time. What I write and what posts never match. ?
