We have 3 kids so the back row in the Cybertruck is jammed packed.... We'd like to go on a ~500mile trip with out kids and miniature schnauzer (in the south). Ideally with our gear and dog in the vault protected from the rain with a closed cover.

Obviously we're worried about heat.

Has anyone rigged up a solution here?

I was thinking maybe a wireless camera with wireless temp reading... Maybe running with the dog crate right next to the tail gate and the cover open ~5-6 inches in non-raining conditions and then closed all the way when it rains?

idk... would be really nice to have the option to throw HVAC back in the vault.

seems pretty miserable for your dog. We have three kids and two small dogs, would never put any of the dogs in the enclosed vault with no climate control, but maybe that's just me.

I’ve been thinking of doing something similar but we use Gunner Kennels for travel and was going to leave the vault about 1/4 to half open for transport.

I guess people do attempt sleeping back there... What about something like this hung over the tailgate?

Maybe you could rig up some seals around the edges to keep everything dry and your pooch cool?

I did a search on those kennels, very cool. Do you have the one with the fan? how well does that work?

Why would you do that? How old are your kids? Plenty of room on the floor in the back seat area, even with the seats down there is tons of room for a dog under the seats and floor. Kids and dog will be happy and safe.

It appears as if a lot of people seem to expect that dogs can't live outdoors!

I don't expect the bed to get that warm when travelling. I believe that there is some airflow when the vehicle is up to speed. Stick a thermometer in it to test.

At the worse, you should be able to open the tonneau a few inches or even all the way, as long as the dog is in a travel container.
And except for the cooler months, I think that I'd appreciate some rain.

In any case, you would need to do something, at least open the tailgate, when stopped. But I'm sure the family is already used to walk the dog time.

If the temp is a little higher than you would like it, then some evaporative coolers may be the answer, simply blowing air across some water. That's how many buildings are cooled.

I don't get why some of you are bothered by this... I precisely created this post to help me find solutions to increase my dogs comfort.

@Mattkalin thanks for sharing the Gunner Kennel brand; those look awesome. A beefy fan and Bluetooth thermostat seem like worthy additions.

I wouldn’t worry about those people. I’ve been putting my dogs in the vault since I took delivery of the truck. City people forget that dogs have been in truck beds for as long as trucks have been made.

I have a Bluetooth thermometer that sends me a notification when the temps get too high or too low and a wireless camera. Most importantly, I have an Ecoflow Wave 2 plugged in for cooling and heating.

I have 2 large dogs (husky and St. Bernard) and a Maltese terrier. They love it back there. I tried having them in the back row with the seats folded up, but they cannot sprawl out like they do in the bed.

They’re already conditioned to the tail gate opening noise. As soon as they hear it, the two larger dogs are already trying to jump in.

Just make sure the dog won't be forgotten back there in the heat or thrown out in an accident... Those are the big things about them being in an unsupervised space.

Right?

I might worry a mini might not have enough thermal mass as a regular dog, but...

Just curious, what type of temps have you been seeing? When moving? When stopped? Do they vary much from ambient temps?

I’m not sure about when not moving, since I’ve only really checked when the truck is in motion on the highway.

However, air temp was mid to high 90s and the Ecoflow Wave 2 outlet temp was mid 50s.

Only issue is I have the vent hoses sticking out of the tail gate/tonneau cover without a custom panel cutout for the hoses, so efficiency is not great. So with my Bluetooth temp sensor I’m seeing mid 70s in the bed.

Once I get that gap sealed up, I’m sure the temps in the bed will be able to stay lower. The gap right now with the hoses sticking out is probably 3-4in so there isn’t anything keeping the cold air from escaping.
