(My dad retired from the phone company. I grew up playing with phone wire, phones in various stages of assembly along with all the electrical tape and wire ties one could ever want.)
My dad didn't work for the phone company, but he foolishly gave me access to a screwdriver

Overall I think it looks promising. One thing I think of is the safety factor of that shutting on a person. I assume there will be some sort of torque monitoring and it will reverse direction. My only concern is force it may take to consistently move that with snow, ice, debris vs. that safety set point. I could see this potentially be tricky. You could solve it with some pressure sensing tech on the leading edge but that is more parts.

Anyone have any experience with these type of designs? I believe widows do this but I assume their closing force is much less?

By that measure, Tesla could just have the tonneau fully open when delivering the truck and then lock it there till the customer paid the extra optional fee to get the tonneau cover functionality. As long as the tonneau is permanently fully open, it would be the same as not having a tonneau.

The user can always just "remove" the tonneau in the same way. On the other hand, if the buyer wants to go extreme, they can cut out the tonneau so that even in the fully open position there is nothing showing. Seems kind of pointless to cut it out though.
Or better yet monthly subscription for fully functional cover!

Interesting. I think that’s similar to phone lines then which send audio and power over the same line.

On POE they use a dedicated pair for power.
That depends on the POE standard used. 802.3bt uses 4 pair for up to 100W PD.

The tesla 48V wiring is likely to run much higher power levels and have different wiring depending on power levels needed to operate the appliance. Theres no point in sending multiple kW of power to an 8nd8catot light, just because the HVAC needs that much.

All these years and I never realized I could have been using free power from the land line in my house to power stuff. You could have probably maxed out that line and the phone company would have never known.

Of course… that likely would have been like 500 watts or something small like that. Could have kept the lights on though.
Or use the same landline to steal government secrets.

Keep in mind “Ethernet” is not a wiring standard. You can send Ethernet over something other than cat 5. Ethernet over coax used to be common.

I don’t think there will be classic Cat 5 style 4 pair wiring on the Cybertruck at all.

Thinnet is half-duplex and tops out at 0.01 Gb. It’s a fine replacement for CANBUS but lacks the bandwidth for the cameras.

Of course, the cameras really need to go straight to the FSD computer to minimize latency.
