are we sure that battery back goes the entire length of the skateboard... that is one LONG truck.. it would be fairly easy to leave a 3-4' section of the back NOT loaded with batteries but part of the skateboard.. then you could put a tire in that little compartment... or at least that is my thoughts on this.

personally i have to ask.. does ANY tesla have a spare tire currently? I believe the answer to that is no they have a tire repair kit <fix a flat and a can of air> since the CT has a compressor.. all we would need with it is the fix a flat.
I would think the tonneau roll would be in the way of a battery stretching back that far.

are you suggesting that I missed that the midgate...

... would be a midgate? :ROFLMAO:

the point was that people hauling 10' long sections of wood/pipe/whatever, will tend to expect to be able to either or both (1) deploy the tonneau to protect the load, or (2) retract the tonneau to reach and unload

@greggertruck 's example is a prime one. to load that sized TV box, you want the tonneau stored to get a person or two up into the bed to gently maneuver the box into the cabin/bed. then you want to be able to deploy the tonneau to protect/lock the load in the CT while you stop at the neighborhood stripclub for lunch break
For @greggertruck's example, might I suggest installing sliding rails and a shelf. But that is a specialty example.

Procedurally, one might have the midgate closed, open the tonneau all the way, have the tailgate down, load the 85 inch TV as far into the bed as possible, close the tonneau (leave the tailgate open), then go into the back seats, lower the midgate, have someone pushing from the tailgate and someone lifting/pulling from the midgate, get the TV pulled all the way forward, then close the tailgate and side doors. It's now loaded. To unload, do something similar but in reverse.

Is this scenario perfect? No. But in reality, how many TV delivery persons are there that stop at the local strip club mid delivery?

Just sayin'.

At this point, I'm in the camp that thinks the midgate is most likely not going to happen. But I also like to imagine and dream about the possibilities of it being there. I see lots of others who wish for the midgate and are holding out some hope. I say, let them dream/fantasize as long as possible. No use trying to crush their dreams just because one thinks they have put yet another final nail into the coffin of the midgate scenario.

It is pretty good. I wonder what all is under the rest of the bed that they were planning for.

I suspect some were hoping for a place to mount a 5th wheel hitch.

Rivian for comparison.

No spare option.

Mid gate was essential for fishing. I had envisaged driving out to catch some squid. Crawl through into the bed would have been handy.

Now I will have to drop a line out of the window lol

Assuming boat mode is controllable from the phone app, one could get in the bed with the equipment on land, use the phone app to "park" in the water, then turn on boat mode to move on out to the favorite fishing / squidding spot. Please try to avoid any pineapples under the sea or more directly Squidward. Then reverse the procedure to get back on land and drive away.

Doesn’t just about every other truck made have a full-size spare?
I would take that over a mid gate. Yes, it can be added in the bed or as a swing out
But that should really be included if they are really intending to sell a truck.

I don’t think midgate is happening due to the tonneau cover retracting into that area. Yes, according to the patent it rolls up below the vehicle, but not completely. There’s still a section of it laying upright in the back wall, so the cover can deploy quickly.

The sail pillars could still be a thing, but they were weirdly not talked about back in 2019 (there was a slide showing them off) and then never shown again. I don’t see any seams in that area, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be there. It was hard to see the way the frunk was going to open, so it’s possible they could still be a thing.

Regardless this thing is going to be a utilitarian beast. I can’t wait to see it on the roads. I wish they would come out with an entire Cyber lineup (Cyberhatch, Cybervan, etc.)
I do not think the sail pillar storage made it in but will not give up on the midgate until after I receive delivery.

Go ahead, prove me wrong by petitioning to have my delivery done early. (Did that work? ?)

1) The battery is not there
2) It wouldn't be dirty as it would be covered by a closeout panel for aero efficency
3) Easier to deploy than having it in the bed and lower CoG

It looks like the 'diaper' (orange outline) is removable, you can see fasteners on the sides (red circles). However with the under floor storage in the bed now being confirmed the chances of there being enough space for a spare are slim to anorexic.

The battery os there. Otheriwse you'd have to put it behind the motor and...
...then the motor is in the way.
And when the motor isn't in the way, the towing brace is.

So no, it's a stupid place. Just put it on top or in the back on a hitch or something.

That's not what the patent says. That's not how to read a patent diagram. Things aren't to scale, and they'll be shown partially unrolled to show the path.

That said, a midgate will be more expensive, it would get used alot, but it also might reduce the overall strength of the truck.

Will my 54" Zero Turn mower fit in this new updated space in the vault?
Does it fit a 50" gap? If no, then no, it wouldn't fit in the OG, either.

Yes, between the motor and the towing brace. Ford does it with the F-150 Lightning and Chevy with the Silverado EV.

So no, it's a stupid place. Just put it on top or in the back on a hitch or something.
The opposite is true, putting it in the bed takes up a significant amount of space and a hitch mounted spare will increase aerodynamic drag.

Weirdly, there's less distance between the Cybertruck motor and the bumper. I can't quite put my finger on why... oh, right, the Cybertruck has a longer, more stable footprint.

In the bed, it can be covered by the vault.

On the roof, aero doesn't matter at offroad speeds.

On the tailgate, aero impact is reduced.

All of them are easier to get to than disassembling thetail aero cover and hoping there's space between the main motive unit and the towing brace.

If there's room, I'm sure you can find someone to mold you a different tail aero cover to put over your 'hidden' ball and chain.
