I have a C6 2007 Corvette that I bought new and had delivered to the National Corvette Museum in November 2006. The C6 series was a totally new design, first delivered to customers in the summer of 2004, just over two years earlier. One of those early 2005 Corvettes was bought by my boss and he had a lot of issues with it, both cosmetic and mechanical; that was a pretty common experience for those early C6s. The people at the assembly plant in Bowling Green and at the Corvette engineering center must have worked hard for a couple of years because my 2007 has had zero (!) mechanical or cosmetic faults.

The points are these:
  • The first production CTs will be sold to the general public in less than a year
  • They won't be perfect.
  • Early buyers of totally new vehicle models will find issues with them.
  • Early buyers, set your expectations properly and you won't be too disappointed.
I'll probably get my offer to buy a CT in early 2025, so my panel gaps should be pretty good, but I'd be happier to have haphazard-looking one show up a year earlier; I promise I wouldn't complain about it.
I want to be one of the first Cybertruck owners but I don't want to be ridiculed for asinine problems.

If they might fly open in transit, they might fly open while driving!!!
Obviously its not designed to do that, but its a liability thing. I bet they are doing this as a precautionary things. The doors are fairly obvious if they arent closed and latched. The hood probably not so much. could be popped and not latched but still appear closed and if the hood opens at 65 mph on the freeway its likely to do some damage.

Will you be one of the first Cybertruck owners, then? If so, congratulations; and I'm a bit jealous! If not, neither of us should be likely to experience many of those problems.

? And yet driving them doesn't have the same risk...
So why else would they tape the hoods. If you are mass producing a product in the early stages you take extra precautionary measures during shipping. I have personally had a family members hood fly up on the freeway because they were doing major engine work and forgot to latch it properly. Mistakes happen so they are taping the hoods. Its not complicated. For people that don't ever work on cars or haul much stuff it may be hard to comprehend how things could fly open or out of the vehicle.

Well I waited in line for the Model 3. Got it in 2018. I have a day one reservation which the websites that guess your place in line says 104,000. I'm guessing maybe 4000 cancelled so I'm likely under 100k in line for the Dual. Which dual is half of the reservations. Since it seems they might make the dual first I might be <50kth in line.

Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Take it for what you want. We know there are issues but you don’t blaze a new trail by not taking risks.

Very true but others downplaying these as delivery ready makes sense as well, like they are taped because they might not have functioning latches or locks. Since they may be crash tested anyway.

Good for you!

I was working and distracted so much I didn't see the announcement in time. The tracking tool says I'm about 225,000th in line for the dual I "reserved". If your logic holds maybe I'll get it sooner than I expect!

And I also hear approx 5% cancellation rate. So likely up in line a bit more as well.

You're right. thats just dumb. At this qty, these are definitely getting released to buyers and meant to hit the streets. I do some metal work so for me one of the biggest questions isnt how the hood pops but how they finished the stainless and how easy it will be to maintain or repair that finish. The fact that exterior is not wrapped during transit gives me some assurance in their confidence in the durability and maintainability of the skin. Only time will tell.

My take on the frunk tape... My guess is that the loaded CTs are in some type of low power "transport mode" meant for getting them from one place to another. It probably allows workers to access them and do what they need without full access or control. It may conserve battery against accidental drain and doesn't give the vehicle full awareness of its state or all systems.

— i.e. It may monitor and power the cabin doors but things like the frunk's switch, frunk position sensors, and latches are wired to a sub-system that gets disabled.

Also, I remember Jesus Diaz, from the way back during his days writing for Gizmodo (I have a knack for remembering dumb things like that). He was a clickbait-clown that did shock/hot takes even then—Old heads may remember when a tech writer got arrested (swat style) after finding a prototype iPhone at a bar. He was an editor for the site at the time. Looks like he still drinks from that well.

I wonder if Tesla will switch to an all stainless lineup to remove the painting at some point if they find it cost effective. Auto paint is a fairly environmentally dirty process.

Rather than being an objective observation about the CT, it’s abundantly clear that the author of this article is making many personal attacks on Musk and Tesla in general. After doing that, it brings into question how objective this person is. I personally believe that Tesla will overcome the issues that they’re having, and will make the CT a success.
