Well, Elon confirmed the hype was just that: ā€œhypeā€.
Thereā€™s only 200K reservations.

Well that confirms it, I've always taken several to mean seven. So 700,000 sounds about right.

Original post:
I saw that as well and I believe it's comes down to the wording. He says 'at least 200,000' orders. Not sure why they are choosing to hold down the numbers. Perhaps to avoid bad publicity when the multiple order holders only buy one, or for those who decide not to buy....

At only 200k its still like 10Billion for them. I think thats a good estimate of actual trucks that will need to be shipped asap, good news for the people waiting i guess!

200,000 is probably a way more accurate number anyway. We always knew there wasn't nearly a million truly committed buyers sitting there with RN numbers. We just weren't sure how many to knock off.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I recently got an RN for a Model Y. It's almost exactly 500,000 higher than my CT RN. So of the 1,000,000 Cybertruck reservations that had been floated I have to assume that also included EVERY other Tesla product sells. So cut that number in half (at least) and then start subtracting for cancellations.

If you research the lawsuit against Rivian you will find Tesla confirming over 500,000 pre-orders for the Cybertruck. I think that should be confirmation the number is much higher than 200k.

Hmm, I guess that report did not make it to Elonā€™s desk.

I can believe that, but how many of that 500,000 do you think has cancelled? Tesla could still truthfully say "We have received over 500,000 reservations... but half of them have cancelled..."

True. But you tend to be pretty conservative with numbers in legal documents.

I think the previous person who said that Elon may not want numbers to disappoint after X people who decide not to buy cancel was correct.

I read and listened to the interview. He said several hundred thousand orders. That can be broadly anywhere from 200,000-500,000. We just assume several = 2.

I must say that I donā€™t understand the Tesla reservations at all. You say that you have a Model Y reservation but we test drive a Model Y a week or so ago and they basically told us that there is no line for Model Ys; that if we put in a ā€˜customā€™ (not on the lot) order it would be 4-6 weeks. Another poster recently said that only a few thousand Model Ys have been made so far. If Tesla really had as many advanced reservations as for Model 3s (several hundred thousand), how could they deliver a custom order to us in 6 weeks?

Doesnā€™t ā€˜several hundred thousandā€™ go up to, but shy of, one million?

I donā€™t understand it either. I can only guess that a lot of the MY preorders didnā€™t convert to actual orders. Iā€™m also thinking there are a LOT of reservations that are waiting for the RWD and 3 row versions.
