I guess I’m confused/unsure here

If I’m understanding correctly, prior to yesterday people being offered Foundation units had a $250 non-refundable deposit at time of placing a Foundation order

But now, as of yesterday, ordering a Foundation unit requires a non-refundable deposit of $1,000?

It makes me wonder what exactly was the learnings by Tesla causing them to change this deposit from $250 to $1,000

Inference must be something like people giving the $250 then latter affirmatively cancelling Foundation orders

Nobody’s known to have taken a single delivery of a Foundation unit (post delivery event)

This seems like a nothing burger. It was $3000 when I configured my M3 in summer of 2018.
Yes you are right , I paid $2500 for booking model x in 2019 and 3000 for model 3 in 2018

Nothing wrong with a $1000 deposit now that the truck has been released and highly talked about on social media. People who are serious have all the specs and pricing. But, do they have a confirmed delivery date. Meaning if they pay the $1000, are they guaranteed a reasonable delivery window?

While the original $100 deposit created a feeding frenzy and basically created a false sense of future sales. The $1000 will put the numbers into reality.

Remember anyone buying a 80-120k CT , a $1000 non refundable deposit will not hurt their ability to purchase the vehicle. But anyone who felt $100 was a no brainer will now have to put up or shut up.

Yes, there are possibly 80% or more that will ask for their $100 deposit back, this just speeds up their decision making and gives tesla a real feel for demand and production. The initial $100. Did not.

So, I feel if Tesla is asking for a $1000, we should be asking for a 90-120 day delivery guarantee.

They probably ran through all the people who were willing to drop 120K at a moments notice.

Now they're moving onto regular folk.

There not hitting the 1K foundation units.

I sort of agree except for what seem to be a few potentially material differences with the Model 3 rollout

The first 30 Tesla Model 3's where delivered first delivered on July 28, 2017, all to Tesla employees and VIPs. At this point Tesla had a press conference where they announced lots of specs and details about the vehicle and trim configurations. More info than they’ve given for CTs so far.

In that following quarter, they produced only 220 Model 3's, which were all "special advanced deliveries" (including to a guy with terminal cancer) to ~insiders.

Deliveries to 'normal' customers weren't reported until December 23, 2017. By December 2017, when ‘normal’ customers were taking delivery, the M3 owners manual was available online.

By the time *you* took delivery in Summer 2018, tons of independent reviews and info were available.

So, here, with

• these Founders editions going to ‘normal’ customers
• Tesla signaling deliveries of 1,000+ units
• Tesla signaling that orders made today may not have deliveries until as late as March 2024 (for dual) or later (for Tri)
• no owners manual available
• limited and confusing official info from Tesla
• added uncertainty, beyond the car itself, of the CT accessories and home power features, most still also with limited info or even eventual pricing
• no clarity on how declining a Founders unit will affect future availability of ordering a normal unit
• all on top of the $20K premium for a Founder’s unit

… it seems plausible that people being asked to put down a non-refundable $1K deposit to order a CT today, do not view it as altogether similar to you putting down a $3,000 deposit on a M3 a year after the M3 delivery event

I think that as much as it being at a moments notice, it could also be the “with virtually no information, and tons of confusion about what the hell it means to commit or decline a $20K price premium unit”

BREAKING:

Starting today, Cybertruck reservation holders will have to pay a $1,000 early access deposit to convert existing reservations into orders (once Tesla invites you to configure and order your Cybertruck).

It will be credited to your final purchase price upon delivery.

On one hand, to be fair to Tesla, this is how basically every ‘normal’ buyer early adopter has had to purchase a new Tesla model - sight unseen

On the other hand, these foundation units and their $20K premium, without clarity on how declining effects ability to purchase a normally priced unit, etc., is wild

How about orders from Europe (Luxembourg) ? I put mine in in 12.2019. Not 100% sure the Beast will be allowed in Europe. Will Tesla ask me to pay 1000 non-refundable ? I really WANT my Beast.
