I'm just as upset that they didn't have a phonograph built into the center console
Is this the part where I’m supposed to laugh?

If you don't have a sense of humor here, you're going to have a bad time.

The fake world where keyboard warriors think they are tough will never cause me to have a bad time. Cute little posts about old school sound reproducing machines are just that. Cute.
Funny?
Nah.

my guy... I own a record player and have a decent collection of vinyls. That quip doesn't land like you think it does ?

Complaining that the world's most technologically advanced car doesn't sport 1800's technology is actually pretty wild

If Tesla were to cache whatever I am listening to when the network feed is disrupted, and starts it back up when the feed is restored (and don’t tell me this can’t be done), I would be fine.
I am almost positive that my 2011 Chevy Volt with a 40G (?) HDD/hard disc cached the FM radio stations that I played and I could pause them when I went into a store or something and continue when I came out (think song, sports, etc).

Got to get your terms correct.

Tesla supports using the US FM Radio channels.

Streaming is NOT Radio.

Tesla uses the cellular system for it's streaming services.

While early Tesla supported satellite radio, current ones do not.

On some feeds, Tesla does support caching. Regrettably, a lot of caching rules are dictated by legal agreements. The "free" services are mostly like to have issues, since caching can require higher license fees.
I asked Tesla if my Model Y has an FM tuner in it and they said no. It didn’t occur to me that it might be cellular because it certainly isn’t using ’my’ cellular service and I thought that the Tesla WiFi isn’t cellular but if it is I stand corrected. That doesn’t change the fact that it drops out a lot near my house because cellular around my house also sucks. Interestingly when I drive through the Devils Slide (Tom Lantos) tunnel northbound I lose radio for most of the tunnel, but southbound not at all. Would cellular work so poorly 20’ away in a tunnel?

But your 2022 Tesla Model Y definitely doesn’t :-(

"AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2023"

I guess Senator Markey briefly forgot how evil Tesla is for pushing unsafe FSD /s and switched to how evil Tesla is for killing AM radio:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1669?q={"search":"1669"}&s=1&r=1

latest US Senate action 09/12/2023: Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders.

Thankfully not making much progress in the swamp.
I wonder about that guy…Oops, no politics.

I have a 2017 TMX (& 2016 Gen 2 Volt).
My kid/spouse have a 2018 TM3 and 2022 TMY. They had a 2012 Gen 1 Volt.
One of my other kids drive our old 2011 Gen 1 Volt.

There is a FM tuner in the vehicles. It isn't streamed. It doesn't come over cellular.
You can manually change frequencies and to channels that don't have signals. And you can see the HD signals coming and going, as they really do. You can even see the signals come and go. Tesla does some pretty cool things with FM, one is that it scans the band and tries to find all of the stations automatically for you.

Tesla uses AT&T cellular in the US. There's a cellular radio in the car and it has it's own SIM card. No, it doesn't use your phone. The Connectivity Option basically pays for the cellular bill.

Yes, Cellular can work poorly in a tunnel. Because of the frequencies that cellular uses, it will drop a lot quicker than some FM signals. But cellular companies often have micro sites in tunnels, some with leaky coax antennas to cover the distances. 20 feet can definitely make a difference, and if I'm looking at the pictures correct, that 20 ft seems to be soiid rock and concrete, which block the cellular signals.

I wish Tesla had XM radio, pretty inexcusable for a $120k vehicle to not have AM or XM. I could live with one of these options, but having neither stinks. I'm often in areas with no cell signal, it turns into a pretty crappy drive in a Tesla.

I assume this is an upcharge tactic to sell more Starlink. One of the reasons I tend to chose to drive my Lightning over my Model 3 is XM/AM radio.

Tesla dropped XM long before Starlink. It was in the original Model S. I suspect that there's a lot of baggage that comes along with Sirius/XM, a big one is the antenna, which is a little problem with a all-glass rood. I'd guess there are some licensing issues as well.

AM, while not proven in the Tesla, has problems with electric vehicles. When motors are spinning, they can put out some hash. I really think that they mostly decided that AM was dying though.

But you can listen to those AM stations that stream. And you can listen to the streaming Sirius/XM streaming (I think, at least through the web browser, yes I know all the issues)

If you are an AM fan, yes, it hurts, if you are a Sirius/XM fan, just get an external unit and transmit to one of the FM channels.
