Has anyone heard of plans to be able to mute/disable the pedestrian speaker when you are off-road / on private property? I plan to use my truck on the farm and I do quite a bit of hunting there and the ability to glide down the trails without unnecessary noise would be a huge bonus during hunting season.

The pedestrian sound is only on while you back up if that helps?

Are you sure? My wife's Y does it at low speed going forward as well. If it doesn't do it on the Cybertruck, great!
really! my CT doesn't do it but none of my other teslas have done it, including my Y. only reverse. what year is your wife's Y and what state are you located in (in the unlikely chance it's specific to jurisdiction and enabled or disabled based on it)?

It's a 2023 Model Y in Virginia. That is entirely possible (and if so, equally annoying).

NHTSA doesn't approve of muting that feature. You'll have to rig up your own override method.

On my 2011 Leaf, they have a button to turn off the VSP (was before the legislation requiring it to be always on). Furthermore, you can actually turn off all the lights and drive fully lightless and soundless except for the crunch of your tires and slight whine of the motors (brake lights will come on but easy enough to avoid that when crawling along slowly). I have a FLIR mounted to the roof and drive using a feed to an eyepiece. A bit awkward and would never do it on city roads with other cars but it works great on the farms roads where all you have to worry about is driving into an irrigation ditch. Is *very* effective keeping the coyotes at bay. I still lose the occasional chicken to an owl or raptor but that is OK. When a coyote gets in the hen house, it is a massacre.

Is there an actual NHTSA CFR mandating it or is it just a Tesla “feature”?

Tesla could detect that you are not on a highway (or any zne that is not governed by nhtsa, like wilderness areas) and let you enable "stealth mode".

The liability handling of that and the space in the regulations does not exist yet. Maybe when they get to Level 5 autonomy.

Not happening. Tesla used to let you play custom sounds or music through the pedestrian warning speaker while driving and it was a fun update while it lasted. The NHTSA made Tesla "recall" that functionally with a later software update because a person could bypass the pedestrian warning requirements by playing a sound clip with no sound.

I had even retrofitted my early 2018 Model 3 for the fun functionality and enjoyed playing the ice cream truck chime while driving through the the parking lot at work.

By the way, the fix is easy if you don't want sound. Just unplug the speaker. You can buy plugs for the other Tesla models that keep the connector clean and dry after you unplug it
