I’ve prepared a list of reasonable requests for software-related updates. I tried not to include ticky-tack items, but those that I thought would be of broad appeal. I hope someone from Tesla sees this list and I suspect some of these may already be in the works. Based on my experience with my Model 3, this is the area when Tesla shines with improving the vehicle after it’s been released!
  • Adjust rear camera (the “on screen mirror”). It would be nice if you could move the cropped view higher or lower, left or right, similar to the way you can adjust your actual mirror. It crops it to a fixed spot, but the actual camera provides so much more possibility for customization.
  • Turn Signal/Rear Camera. When turn signal is activated, the on screen “rear view mirror” disappears. Both rear view and the turn side camera should both be on screen. At a minimum, pressing the camera button on steering wheel should cycle through the two camera views. [Note: one hack for this is if you’re still moving at a decent clip, you can hit the camera button on your steering wheel twice and it cycles back to the rear view mirror. But then you can’t get back to the turn side camera unless you turn off signal and turn it on again.]
  • Vault Lights. Currently the vault lights can only be turned on and off when in park. Sometimes there is a need for a passenger to look in the rear and when the tonneau is closed, there’s no easy way to look in the back from within the cab while driving.
  • Tailgate obstacle detector or PIN lock [UPDATED]. Would be great if the open tailgate on screen or in app had a warning before opening if an obstacle is detected. Obviously if you push the button in the back then it should override and not be blocked by the obstacle detector. Or, add a PIN to open similar to the glove box.
  • Trailer Mode. When a cable is plugged into the 7-pin or 4-pin connector, trailer mode should automatically be activated. Trailer mode deactivates when you exit the vehicle and re-enter, even if there’s a trailer plugged in.
  • Rear camera in reverse. touch to zoom when in reverse (for example when hitching). Virtually all current trucks do this.
  • Estimated weight/payload. It would be helpful for the truck to be able to estimate payload or weight of trailer being towed. If it could provide weight on each axle, even better!
  • Projected towing range. When towing, the range bar on main screen should provide updated estimated mileage range. [In full disclosure, the Tesla trip application may provide this. I haven’t towed enough yet to see if that graph provides estimated range.]
  • Cabin overheat protection. Wish this was available.
  • Mobile App update to monitor electrical load. Currently, you can only monitor the load from within the truck. (If there’s a way to see the load from the app, I can’t find it.) While camping or otherwise, it would be helpful to see how much drain is on the truck (as well as seeing estimated time before battery will be depleted).
  • FSD. Obviously. I know this is long in the works and isn’t coming tomorrow, but I couldn’t leave this off the list.
  • Auto Level [NEW]. An onscreen button to level the truck would be helpful, or the ability to turn on auto-leveling after X amount of time..
  • Hitch mode [NEW]. Create a “hitch mode” or something similar that would allow use of the tonneau buttons to inch forward or backward the truck to fine tune as you‘re trying to hitch up a trailer.
  • Integrated trailer camera feed on screen [NEW]. Some of the newer trucks now allow a camera feed to pass through the 7-pin connector through to the center display. It would be an incredible feature if the software/hardware allows it.
  • Towing Visualization [NEW]. When in tow mode, the display should not show something behind you. Currently, it shows a truck or 18-wheeler.
  • Mobile App update to allow trailer light test [NEW]. This would allow you to stand behind your trailer and initiate the light test to ensure everything is functioning (as opposed to having to initiate it on the center display).
If I’m wrong about any of the above or there’s another broad support item, please add!

Auto-Leveling: super useful when you camp. This is available in the Rivian, and heard it's supposed to come out at some point.

Agree. Auto-leveling would be nice. Processing a camera feed through the 7-pin would also be nice.

For some reason my map defaults back to non satellite view everytime and I have to manually change it back. I would like that to be fixed.

You didn't say anything about the rear wheel locks.
Otherwise your list and those that have been added by others is a good start.
Personally I am looking for a solution (perhaps after market) to the rearview view issue. That would be a HW/SW solution and not appropriate to your post but it is valid to me.

Cabin overheat protection- just added with the latest update. ??
I’m running on .8.12 and it still does not have the cabin overheat (or I can’t seem to find it). I have seen the headlines that it’s being added, but not yet From what I can tell.

I forgot to ask who you are submitting these to. I always send my FSD/SW/HW suggestions to [email protected]. They never do anything but they do acknowledge the email.
I wasn’t planning to send the list to anyone specifically. I did see someone link to it on X.

My hope in posting here is that some Tesla employees are watching this and taking note of reasonable (not over the top) requests. I know they have people on these forums because they’re enthusiasts too.

I have never noticed any Tesla employees, per se, on this forum. If so they have never come out and said so. We have had participants that clearly have close ties with Tesla but have you also submitted your ideas to TeslaTap? That is one place I submit suggestions because they track both suggestions and implementations. I do not think I would expect Tesla to monitor what goes on here; if you want these things to be done be more proactive.

Couple more:
  • Fix onscreen visualization when towing. Currently when towing my boat it flickers like there is a bus right behind the truck.
  • Would love some type of hitch view when reversing to the trailer, that showed a zoomed in view of the hitch on the screen.
  • Hitch mode, which would allow you to use the tonneau controls to creep the truck forward and back to align the hitch while standing behind the truck.
  • Initiate trailer light test from the app, and show in app real time which lights are on as it cycles through. Reverse, right blinker, left blinker etc.
I feel like there is a ton of cool things they can do with towing software that no other truck can do.

Your proposed “hitch mode” is brilliant. I hadn’t even thought of that.

I’ll edit and update the list in a little while.

I don't know I think it's pretty plausible that there are Tesla engineers that do read these posts. Maybe not like religiously and they may not be high level decision makers, but a lot of them got trucks early on and a lot of them probably value our opinions. Like if you're a Tesla engineer in secret lol
