but…

Should be as easy as six bolts to take out the bed floor. Grab the iPad and put the bed floor back in place 10 minutes tops

it's already been done. it is 10 bolts, 6 long, 4 shorter. 4 shorter go in front of bed near tonneau cover well. and the rest middle/back towards tailgate. If you put a long bolt towards well, it will cause tonneau to stop early and not fully open. found out the hard way.

Let say you load it up with soil/dirt, close the cover so it doesn't get muddy. Go over a lot of bumps, and rough terrain. Wouldn't the dirt just fall into that cavernous area?
Unless you initially pack the load right up against the window I think gravity would have it settle away from that area.

One item of warning. The bolts for bed floor are not equal length. The four bolts towards the front/ cab/“tonneau well” are shorter than the rest. Super important to know. I put a long bolt in front and it actually stopped/interfered with the tonneau cover from fully opening.

The long bolts are about 5.5cm and the shorter ones about 4.5cm.

the bolts have a 15mm head and the thread is 10x1.5 (metric all around).

10 total bolts, 6 long and 4 shorter.

Wow, the bolt-length issue is not even mentioned in the Service Manual procedure!

It's not, and I was not happy about that. these pictures and documentation are pretty old, as from what I can tell, they don't even have the 2x20amp and 1x40amp (240v) plugs shown in any pictures, on the left rear wall.

that's why it's super important to realize the shorter bolts go at the front/top holes and long bolts go in middle and rear (tailgate) side.

I got my truck yesterday and it wasn't until this tread that I realized, the tonneau cover storage cavity is essentially a pit of death. I am curious how leaves, dirt, and any other debris will collect in this hard-to-reach cavity. I am assuming that there is a water drain because it wouldn't make sense for there to not be one. The real question is how large of debris could we possibly flush out assuming there is a drain. I am a little concerned about this much like the pit of death under the Rivian tailgate hinge.

I've always had tonneau covers on my pickups because they provide lockable space without all the disadvantages of a canopy. The motorized cover on the Cybertruck's vault is, by far, the most functional, most convenient, most theft resistant and the strongest tonneau cover of them all. And, it comes with the truck at no additional cost, unlike the rest.

A tonneau delete option would have a very low take rate, they would sell very few of them. Most people think Cybertruck's automatic tonneau cover is one of the best features of the truck. I don't see a delete option coming in the next 6 or 8 years because Tesla likes to focus on hitting the heart of the market, where the most buyers are, and keeping things simple to keep prices low and functionality high. Those who want a truck without a tonneau can select a different manufacturer (or remove it themselves).

I love the sound it makes when deploying and retracting. It's mesmerizing.

Just yesterday, when I exited a country store, a young man was looking at my Cybertruck with wide open eyes, jaw hanging down. I said, "Pretty cool truck, huh?" and he said, "Is that yours?" with a look of disbelief in his eyes. When I demonstrated the tonneau cover uncovering the bed and going "clickity-clack, clickety-clack", he simply said, "No way!".
I love these stories. They’re the hopeful wonder-filled side of technology that I enjoy hearing about. Maybe that experience will inspire him to become an engineer. Good stuff.

Well it happened to me and my CyberTruck too!

My daughter was playing in the bed with the tonneau closed, building a fort, setting up pillows and photos, etc. Everything was going well until she starts crying and climbs out to tell me "Daddy you are going to be so mad". I gave her a big hug and said whatever it is, as long as she was ok, I promise I won't be mad.

She tells me she had setup the phone on the ledge to watch her shows. She moved her pillow and then it fell in. Needless to say, it was long gone, couldn't see it with a little endoscope thing either.

My wife finds this thread and we start reading. I couldn't believe someone else had this happen so I wanted to post. The comments gave us a smile and suggestions, especially the link to the service pages, were very helpful.

Long story short, the phone was alive for a day, so drove a car around with no lock. At least PIN to drive is a thing. I bought a breaker bar, torque wrench, followed the instructions to remove the bed cover and my wife (who loves McGyver) proceeds to hop into the back with the tonneau closed, puts one leg on either side and reaches her hand in the little gap and using a pair of forceps plucks out the iPhone. Miraculously unharmed.

My daughter (6) said "Daddy, your face got red, but you didn't yell." She was as happy as I was to have it back and avoid a service visit. The procedure to take it all apart looked daunting and likely very expensive to say the least.
