Ok. And you say the cable is long enough? Where does it route down to the receiver? Inside the tailgate?

yes, plenty long. I ran the cable out the bottom right side of tailgate then down behind the bumper and out where the mount is so it's all protected. I had to unwrap the taped camera wire from the main harness in tailgate, simple, then rewrapped the wire to protect it again but that was easy too. the camera took about 5 minutes to reboot automatically after reconnecting it. Camera is in i'ts own mount too which made it easy to mount into the 2 inch square stock.

Sorry to be a nag but this is absolutely fascinating. Do you have any pics of what your rearview camera looks like on the Tesla screen?
any obvious disadvantages of the camera relocation except maybe a little road debris?
do you use one of those washer kits like tesbros sells?

No problem. Id say no disadvantages at all. Like it better when connecting trailer. I dont get road debris in this location and haven't cleaned it but 10k miles ago.

I'd love FSD to be able to figure out a relocated rear cam; but, how come it can't figure out not to hug the left lane line, or run over to the rumble strip?

Edit: If you read the twitter thread, it seems to work, until it doesn't.
That was my posts and experience with relocating the rear camera. As mentioned in another post in this thread it was pretty easy to relocate. I used an extension antenna cable with the matching connectors to fit the Tesla camera (I found a post of a M3 using the same cable for a camera). I moved the camera to the top and back of the Urander rack. I temporarily zip tied it to the roof rack cross bar and aligned the camera to match as close as I could to the view of tailgate mounted camera. Everything seemed good and worked for almost the entire trip from Northern CA to the Colorado Pikes Peak Tesla event. My DAS shutdown about 100 miles from home. This is when I first noticed all the error messages in the alert logs about the rear camera self calibration failing. It had been posting the alerts since I relocated the camera, but I never looked at the logs in service mode. I reset DAS and drove the few miles to re-calibrate my cameras. FSD was back working again. FSD continued to work for the rest of my trip home, about 100 miles. However, the next time I drove the CT, DAS had shutdown again.

I reconnected the camera in the tailgate and removed my spare tire from the UP bumper swing arm. I am sure if I had someone 3D print a camera mount that would securely hold the camera in the exact pitch/roll/yaw position as the tailgate location it would work. However, that could easily change with FSD updates.

Couple of my takes about relocating the spare tire. I really wanted my spare tire out of the vault to have the additional space for camping gear. It did work great and it was nice having the extra space. But, I didn’t understand the new issues with having a spare tire on a swing arm. I liked to drop my tailgate at Superchargers to prepare a meal. This is mostly not possible because there is not enough space to fully move the swing arm out to drop the tailgate. Some of the older V1/V2 Superchargers are not positioned the same and it is pain backing in between the stations to get close enough for the cable to reach the charging port. This is similar issue at home in the garage with two cars. I had to back in my CT a little farther into the garage to allow the swing arm to fully open without hitting my wife’s MX. Basically, anytime you want to drop the tailgate, you have to consider the amount of space on the side of your CT. One other smaller item. The spare tire on the bumper is adding about 100lbs past the rear tires. I weighed my CT at a closed truck scales and found that my rear axle weight was about 1,200lbs more than the front axle.
Anyway, I not sure if I am going to try again. Right now, I am preparing for another trip and I have relocated/removed gear in the vault to accommodate the spare tire 😜

I also learned that while towing, you can use FSD by canceling tow mode.
Any performance issues? Does the trailer brake continue to function? (Does the CT have a trailer brake controller?)

I’d be nervous about letting FSD drive when it doesn’t know there’s a 20ft extension hanging off the back of the truck.
is that not the case?

Thanks for the details! I didn't think FSD could reorient itself with a new camera position and your experience would seem to confirm that to be the case.
