I suspect a manufacturing issue is responsible for the defective motors. Glad to hear that your vibration issue is 100% solved now.

Apparently not. The loaner I've been driving, a newer Model X (stalkless), exhibits a rather strong shudder when accelerating hard from a low speed. I can feel it in the seat. The vibration goes away once reaching speed. Is this the vibration you are referring to? Supposedly, it's a design issue with the front half shafts.
It's more a slight rumble coming from the front that is more audible than anything. Feels like slightly rough pavement or very worn 'rumble' strips on the berm. Happens through the 40mph range, although I think it's starting in the high 30s now.
I don't really feel it in the wheel or seat, but it's hard to really say what it is.

More irritable is the weird ocsillation of the steering wheel when getting in and out of parking spots if you go slow enough

Correction: Front Drive Unit Assembly - Front Drive Unit - Remove and Replace
Parts Replaced or Added
FRONT DRIVE UNIT - DUAL MOTOR CONFIGURATION (1930000-TX-F)

Correction: Rear Drive Unit (Dual Motor) - Remove and Replace
Parts Replaced or Added
REAR DRIVE UNIT - DUAL MOTOR CONFIGURATION (1920000-TX-H)
MV BATTERY- LITHIUM ION-48V (1679931-00-F)

I was told that Part # 1920000-TX-H is the latest rear motor revision.
I don't know why the 48V Li-ion battery had to be replaced.
These motor numbers are EXTREMELY important, and thank you for sharing. I am now wondering if these drive unit model numbers are on the motors, similar to other model teslas. Now I am curious on what VIN range older motors are currently on

Just got a call from my service center to replace my rear drive unit in my AWD. I have over 15k miles but never noticed any vibration. I sent a message a few days ago about the rear drive unit because of this thread and also the aero covers, but I got a call today to schedule the service. They did mention it was going to be part of a recall for the unit and they have the part in stock. Around 1100 vin.

The vibration is very subtle. The Tesla techs that test drove my CT had a hard time feeling the vibration, even though it was obvious to me. Rough asphalt pavement will easily mask it. When they put a vibration tester on the truck, however, the vibration registered at 63 mph.

The highway near my road was just redone and it’s very smooth for miles. About .75 miles of my driveway is gravel. I guess between the two I had become unable to notice any vibration. I’m just happy it’s getting replaced. The sc rep did say something about a magnet becoming loose in the unit and that’s why there will be a recall… they were unable to provide more details other than that. I hope you’re enjoying your ct even more now :)

A quick look under the truck, it's clear that only the rear motor/inverter/gearbox assembly was replaced. The half shafts, CV joints, and suspension parts are the original.

I don't know what a rear motor replacement costs. This used motor is offered on EBay for $12,500. Add Tesla labor rate at $245/hr to carry out a 100+ step removal and install procedure, I'm guessing it's around $18,000. Am I close?

Information on this matter is sketchy. This article sums up what's generally known. Apparently, some owners of early production trucks are being contacted by Tesla with an offer to swap out one of the motors for a study, not saying which one. I was told by Tesla Service that my CT's rear motor was replaced with the improved version. I didn't receive an invitation to have it replaced, however. I have less than 6000 miles driven. They may be looking for high mileage motors at this point.
Update…took my AWD CT with VIN in 2800 range to SC on 9/10. Their original corrective action for the vibration was to balance the wheels. I explained your issues and they recommended a test drive with their technician. I asked the tech to drive so he could feel the vibration (he has many years in the car business and 9 years with Tesla) and he immediately knew it was not a wheel balance issue. The steering wheel vibration is very high frequency and begins around 40mph, getting worse with higher speed. A very noticeable “buzzing” feel. After a few miles, holding the yoke becomes uncomfortable. Left mirror vibrates at equally high frequency and becomes useless, as objects appear blurry. Right mirror is rock solid. I was so glad that the tech agreed with my findings, and he said they had 4 other CTs coming in that day for recall services; he would drive them to compare with mine. He also agreed that because I have such low mileage (only 230 miles on my CT), this issue was most likely there from the beginning. I’ll continue to update here as I get more info from them. Our local SC folks seem to be top notch crew and willing to dig into the real issue. Stay tuned.

Update 9/22: Rear drive unit replaced. Vibration gone. Thanks again for the assist, Cybergirl.

wonder if new motors will fix the latest version Model X vibration issues at 40+mph. Mine is now starting at a lower speed
Our X vibrations was from the CV joints. They have been replaced twice in 55,000 miles.

To all who are being told it is just how it is because it is a truck. That is nonsense and not true. We have a 2020 X and the truck is easily a smoother ride and quieter than our X. For reference we took delivery May 10th. 7,xxx vin.

I got a call from my Tesla Service Center today informing me that they fixed the vibration problem that occurred at highway speeds since I took delivery of my Cybertruck on Feb 28th. I posted on the problem here. After verifying the existence of the vibration (it was subtle but quite annoying) using a vibration testing instrument, they received an okay from Austin to replace one or both motors as necessary. They first replaced the front motor which didn't eliminate the vibration, so they replaced the rear motor. No vibration! I can pick up my truck on Monday once it's cleaned and charged.

The rear motor was replaced with the new version that Tesla is offering early VIN owners the option to upgrade to for better efficiency and reliability. I wonder if my problem was related to some known reliability issue with CT's permanent magnet motor. Maybe I'll see some range improvement with the new rear motor? The Tesla SC manager said they will send the faulty motor to Austin for technical analysis.
How did you or Tesla figure out what the problem was. I just started feeling a vibration while I drive as well. It fees like something is out of alignment. It's a consistent wobble type vibration. Any suggestion how to communicate it to Tesla to get them to figure it out?
