Feels almost like they aren’t just adding a new configuration, but rebooting the entire lineup.

I think people should prepare to drop all presumptions about the previous “Single Motor, Dual Motor, Tri Motor” configurations entirely. Dual motor is almost certain. Tri motor I suspect may be gone.

Musk said a long time ago a “Plaid” option might exist.

This combined with 4 motors is going to kick Rivian's ass. And with Teslas amazing computer control of traction etc, it will run circles around Rivian's off-road capabilities.

So now we know how they are going to get around not honoring the preorders. By producing the 4 motor version for a couple years until people get tired of waiting for cheaper versions. My bet is it will land somewhere around $90k. There are definitely enough people out there with money to spend to keep production of this version busy for a couple years. I really think this is the strategy. Make a version that no one has been able to order so that you don't have to honor the orders. Seems to line up with a lot of the nonsense that has come out of Tesla in the last couple years. But I guess when you have almost unlimited demand you can get away with it.
This is my cynical hat take on it too. But I’m definitely in wait and see mode. I’ve also heard that the dual motor configuration is going to come early which would be tolerable.

My hope is they increase the range of the dual motor, the whole reason I moved to the tri motor was for the range. I would be quite happy with a dual motor with ~400 miles of range even if the price was (a bit) higher.

I don’t doubt the price will rise but remember it was not just batteries where they cut costs, single mega cast chassis/vault, and cut and fold body saves space and cost of a number of robots as well as human labor and fairly spartan interior too. So price increases “may” not be as bad as you speculate.
well dont forget to add in the almost passed 12,500 credit that will be added into cost

For the ~0.5% of people whos off-roading needs that require it, it’s fantastic news.

The dual motor with adjustable suspension is more than enough for what I would reasonable dare.

Everything is kind of out the window. How long will the quad be the only shipping config? Will dual and tri ship at the same time? Have they dropped the single motor config entirely?

All a big gray cloud.
no....brown cloud waiting to have a big dump

The price will jump to? $100k?
HERE IS THE ISSUE.

Note the wording.... Initial production will be 4 motor variant, with independent, ultra fast response torque control of each wheel.

So if you have a Tri-Motor on order, like I do, maybe the 4 motor version is the only thing made in 2023 and 2024....and the price is $99,000

This allows Tesla to get around "not raising the price". They drop the single motor. So that price point is gone. They produce the Quad Motor for the first 2 years, at whatever new price they come up with, and maybe they never produce the dual motor too.

THE PRICE OF THE CYBERTRUCK JUST WENT UP

Don't be too surprised if the roadmap announcement gives us the following:

  • Single Motor RWD Dual Motor AWD with 250+ miles $39,900
  • Dual Motor AWD with 300+ 500+ miles $49,900
  • Tri Motor Quad Motor AWD with 500+ 600+ miles $69,900
  • Quad Motor AWD with 600+ miles and Baja 1000 ready $89,900
But then, I have more of an optimistic view of things and I trust that Elon is ready to kick some serious ass.
This would make me quite happy:
  • Dual Motor AWD with 450+ miles $59,900
No need to get greedy here.

This also means the dual motor variant will be the last to enter production now instead of the single motor. Which means my 1/2025 estimated delivery just went to 2026 or more!
Yep. And since my Cyberwatch says it is 2021, waiting until 2026 is a loooong time.
