Sad to say I won’t blame you for not believing me, but:

there’s what I consider ‘American gun culture,’ then there’s these modern Johnny-come-lately glorification noobs I’m speaking of

but no doubt, the eg historical NRA my great-grandfather belonged to compared to the modern NRA (which I abandoned a decade ago, in disgust) suggests I’m probably just sentimental for a past that is going extinct as the Idiocracy swells, and that *is* now ‘American gun culture’

Depends on the rifle and the round. Here’s a video of all of this to the extreme.

Call me old-fashioned, but this sort of modern trend towards cavalier firearm glorification by reckless noobs gives a bad name to those of us raised by generations of sportsmen who passed on a deep respect for firearm safety.

To see an automobile manufacturer venture into these noob ranks is, to me, just wild and off-putting.
Ok, I’ll bite. Seeing as I’m just a lowly certified firearms instructor in 4 different areas, a competitive shooter both in handgun and rifle, and a few other things… from what has been released, exactly what rule of safety has been proven to have been violated? No doubt you can imagine how they did this that might break a rule or two, but it is unproven. I can imagine more than one way this could be done safely.

I’m sure that there are people that will find this disturbing or offensive or off putting or more. So be it. I am the last person to tell anyone what or how to feel about anything. I’m also the last person that believes any person’s opinion needs to travel any further. Including mine. But feelings and opinions aren’t anything more.

So I’m guessing the truck is resistant to brush and car dings, which I hope is the goal of their message.

Is there a video of them lighting the truck up? I’m surprised they(EM, et all.) just state “ya we shot it, worked great” without much parameters of the test presented. Haven’t really looked into it, no time.

I grew up in a rural area with guns and actually my high school had compulsory miliary cadets in grades 9 and 10 and a shooting range in the basement and we were all taught to shoot.

Several years ago we had a farm so I had a couple of .22's to take care of ground hogs, skunks and porcupines but we sold the farm and I didn't maintain my FAC (firearm acquisition certificate).

As I live in Canada we at one point had compulsory gun registration, however this was recended with a change in federal government.

Recently we acquired a 100 acre wooded property and in order for me to buy another gun or ammunition, I had to take a two day gun safety course to get my permit (PAL) which cost $200 CAD. At the end of the course there was both a written and practical test and I believe you needed 80% to pass.

Although I have had guns all my life, it is amazing how much I learned and enjoyed the course (ditto for a two day chainsaw course I took after using chainsaws all my life too- both very dangerous pastimes lol)

I didn’t say anything about how they did it.

I said:

Case in point: a member here was just overnight, with no irony or criticism, suggesting this truck was shot up by someone standing in close range firing auto bursts at immobile 3mm SS, not on a hinged swing, that they expected to deflect the rounds. As though any person doing so shouldn’t fairly be called an idiot.
separately, I criticized what I view as the certain sort of cavalier gun-dumb vibes of musk’s xweet - in the context of him being the CEO of Tesla, hyping a passenger vehicle product in this way

Tesla Cybertruck Bulletproof tested Cybertruck spotted!! Musk confirms: "No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment." [⚠️ ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS] B7436A7A-3FD1-4E69-B07E-9C69F12EBC5E

feelings and opinions are kind of the only thing of importance in a society. The question is only what quality of info is animating those feelings/opinions.

I don’t know for certain if it was filmed. But I’d lean toward betting that it was, if only as some b-roll for the delivery event - sort of like the unveil video of the silly F150 tug-of-war

I counted 71 bullet impacts. Possibly 1 chambered round + 70 RD drum mag.
Are you sure it wasn't 72 impacts?

I think I found the gun they used!

Cybertruck is not a combat vehicle. The point is that the exterior is strong enough to resist small arms fire, and will therefore laugh off door dings and stray shopping carts.

That is not true. Elon very clearly said at the unveling that 'we were able to make the skin out of thick ultra-hard stainless steel'. He did not say that the doors are made of thick ultra-hard stainless steel:

It was later shared that the thickness he referred to was 3 mm. This was widely shared. There have been any number of interviews, even by Franz this year, where they continued to say the same things about the skin and formability.

If they have made the rest of the vehicle with thinner stainless, or another grade, then they could have used a stamping press but they have 'never' said that they could use a stamping press to form any part of the skin.
I have a hunch that the frunk, valance and front fenders are a thinner gauge SS. Why? Front end crumple zone.

The thickness of the SS is secondary to the needs of the crumple zone. To look at it the other way, take an empty aluminum can. Upright, you can stand on it and nothing happens. Just touch the sides, and the whole thing collapses. A 3mm SS frunk, at the angles it is at, with the attachment points it has, is not going to make a significant difference in the crumple zone area. Same thing true of the front fenders, I have no doubt that the engineers at Tesla are able to use even 10mm steel in the front and still have adequate crumple zones (just attach them to thin mounts and they would fall right off.) I’m not saying this is how the front is attached, rather it would be a way to attach 10mm plates. There are probably a dozen different ways to use the 3mm SS to their advantage.

Where are people driving, in a brand new $50k (hopefully?) truck that this would be of any use? I can’t see a need, and if there is an actual need you would want to do some proper armoring anyway.

Crumple forces are way higher than you apparently think. It crumples fine.

Do I need to get out the picture of the Starship that smacked into the construction bay?

Per Elon Musk:

"We emptied the entire drum magazine of a Tommy gun into the driver door Al Capone style. No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment."
