You have to know that Tesla knew for a fact that they could build a 500-mile Cybertruck ‘when’ they announced it (I.e., with 18650 or 2170 cells), so if they are only building a 300-mile Cybertruck right now it is by choice.
So you think that in 2019, having decided to build the CT rolling prototype only 1 month before, that their product roadmap wasn’t littered with assumptions, stretch goals, and TBDs?

That it was a mere whim to develop it around the 4680, because they for no good reason felt the 18650 or 2170 made the path to 500 too easy?

This seems bananas

I mean

Model S Plaid is a thing?

besides, suggesting it’s an choice is to assume both choices are possible (at present)
Sure it’s a choice: dual w/300+ or tri w/300+. But my comment was, if you reserved a tri-motor w/500-mile range, what is the likelihood that you wanted acceleration when you made the reservation, and would you be placated with the extra motor without the range? Whether you are right or not it just doesn’t make sense to me…unless they are going to release the ’real’ tri later.

I never used any of that colorful language but the Cybertruck was designed years before Battery Day and Tesla ‘had’ never announced specs they didn’t later meet or beat. That is, not until now by your reckoning.

Sure glad I’m not a first gen CT purchaser, reading all this hoopla. Kinda excited to see what happens in the first couple years.

the plaid is the “performance” S, and because of the extra power gets a bit *less* max range

like that
Just because the S/X performance has less mileage than the LR versions, doesn't mean that will hold for the CT.

Main reason is Towing. S/X weren't meant for towing. CT is, and you need LOTS of range to tow.

Well, technically, you need ‘LOTS’ of range only to tow large boxes for long distances.

Regardless, I’m not here working forward from observations (eg towing needs long range) into a conclusion (so CT at release will have a LR version)

I’m working from a conclusion (CT at release won’t have a LR version) backwards into a explanatory analogy (they’re releasing essentially the CT-versions of a Model S and Model S plaid offering)

Having to change after 88 miles of towing is, in fact, crap
For you, and many, yes, but much has been said of all the people that drive pickups around town and never tow anything. For them the Lightning is already fine.

I am ok with that as long as it is their intention to release the 500+ mile version…and not 2 years down the road.

I understand what you are saying, but I disagree.

Elon did not know for a fact that they could buiild a 500 mile Cybertruck in Nov 2019.

Much like when he announced the Roadster in Nov 2017. He THOUGHT he would be able to build it. He hoped he could.
Also like the Semi. And FSD. Etc. He has great vision, and doesn't know if he can accomplish it, but he swings for the fences. He himself will say he knows he will fail at times. Which is okay. I think battery tech just has not improved as fast as he hoped. We will find out soon.

The great thing about finally coming out with the Cybertruck is that it will separate the dreamers from those they really want a Cybertruck.

How long are the years on your planet?

Cybertruck Event: Nov 21, 2019
Tesla Battery Day: Sep 22, 2020

Surely the "new battery cell" was on their roadmap when they were projecting the Cybertruck's specifications.

If you believe that, well, I don't even know what truck you!re referring to.

I watch Transport Evolved, they have a Lightning, and tow, and don't have to charge every 88 miles.

435 miles of range divided by 70 mph (average) equals 6.21 hours... (using military time)

1. Start trip at 0500, drive 420 miles (420 total)
2. Have lunch from 1100-1130
3. Drive 420 miles (840 total)
4. Have dinner at 1730-1800
5. Drive 420 miles (1,260 total)
6. Arrive at the hotel at 2359.
7. Charge overnight.

Man, you could cover 1,260 miles without ever having to stop just to charge! Just don't have to pee between stops!
