One of the main appeals to me of the CT was that (I thought) I wouldnt have to baby it (washing, waxing, etc) due to a lack of paint, and being made with the same steel used to make rocketships to outerspace. So much for that.
Ability to not have to worry about paint and have a semi decent/professional looking vehicle.....

I wonder if at some point in the manufacturing process, ferrous material is getting embedded in the surface of the panel (contaminated panel finisher maybe?), and their guidance of how to fix it is to sand the panel down with the right tool to match factory finish and remove the contaminants.
You used .... PROTOMATTER.... in the 30X stainless steel?????

(Apologies, to those who aren't Star Trek geeks).

Yet, just another thing we were not told about :) Let the yelling at me begin. No 500 miles, no ramp, I might get rust I need to take care of. This is my opinion of why I might not buy the truck. In order to get close to the 500, I will need to pay another 15 grand, so the price didn't only go up on the truck, we must also pay extra for what was supposed to be in/on the truck.

Having no contamination in a manufacturing steel environment is nearly next to imposible. I'm positive that we wouldn't be talking about this issue if the CT was painted. My money on the table that this is been currently discussed at Tesla.

GM has a couple EV trucks in the pipeline that should deliver with 400 to 500 miles around the $100k mark. Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. Plus its not based on promises, they are using the same platform as the Hummer EV which has already proven itself and the Silverado EV is already out.

Ford has some secret 2nd gen EV truck coming, but no details on that yet.

I've been dreaming of the CT so long. I already paid the down payment/taxes on the Cybertruck, but the intoxicating drug called hype is wearing off. I blame you guys lol

Thanks for the info, sorry to bust the bubble. I am truly sad about this as well. Not sure what I will do yet.

I think a lot of us could handle an extra $15k to get a 500+ mile truck. Wait until the Foundation series premium goes away, pay 95k for the truck. BUUUUUT paying an extra 15k and loosing most of the bed space is a stick in the eye, high maintenance exterior also not great but will see how that shakes out.

I agree, its important to be accurate and fact-base when we post, but its good for Tesla to be aware of these issue. This corrosion/rust related topic sounds important to many people, hope Tesla will give us some official guidance to maintain exterior so that we do not need to get lost.
I know there is some instruction in the manual, but people said it is applied to all Tesla. We need the one specific to CT

I received my AWD Cybertruck on February 1, 2024. Throughout the LA rain, I noticed the corrosion was forming on the metal like other people have noted, so I decided to start documenting it and bringing it to Tesla's attention. I figured it was already on their radar, but I want it attended to under the warranty. So I made a service appointment for this morning.

The truck was taken to the back and the exterior was washed, just to verify the corrosion was not specks of dirt.

Speaking with someone at the facility, they told me 1) they have a procedure/guidance for how to fix it, but 2) they don't have the tools on hand, nor have they done this repair before. They documented the corrosion, and told me they'll give me a call next month when the tools have arrived and they can perform the service/repair.

The Cybertruck has 381 miles on it, and has spent much of the 11 days in my custody parked in front of my house. Cold weather, rain, and some direct sunlight later, I attached a few photos of the corrosion spots and a video. Seems like it's much more prominent on the top metal that rises above the truck bed moreso than anywhere else, but the spots are definitely everywhere in the metal.

Pardon my gross hands and fading nail polish...

Thst corrosion looks nasty. Its almost a deal breaker without a OEM warranty fix, or immediate wrapping. OH? What does the warranty cover on exterior corrosion???

It's not corrosion, it's contamination. Likely rail dust. My brand new painted truck had spots exactly like this. BKF takes it off CT, shown over and over, yet people keep propagating this as some kind of issue with the steel. So far, there is no evidence of CT panels actually corroding.

Thanks CB. it would be nice to see before and after cleanup shots! Nothing a little windex and wax can't fix? Oh, don't wax stainless, right? Just a several hour, tedious, application of a clear coat? I do hope you're right and all this nonsense is overblown. We'll find out here first!! I do want to leave my CT outdoors! Mac

Agreed

If it is rust
If it is rail dust
If it is mini Mars meteors
Doesn't matter, shouldn't be present on a $120,000 vehicle, and should be addressed and customer notified how and when it will be fixed.

I have a service appointment early March to address this, I have a feeling they're just going to use an equivalent of Barkeeper's Friend to remove the spots and then go over the surface with high grit sander or something? Should it be present in a vehicle at delivery? No. Did it stop me from buying the car? Hell no.

As someone else said, I've seen no indication (on my CT anyway) that these are corrosion; as in, the surface itself oxidizing or eroding in a way that's commensurate with corrosion. The spots come out, and that seems to be that.

I suspect Tesla will hand guidance to the delivery centers for steps to correct the presence of these spots during the detail and wash process just before delivery.

This happens to ANY car transported by rail or stored near a rail yard. The solution would be wrapping cars during transport, like you see a lot of higher-end mfgs do... but that ain't Tesla. They will say it's environmental, provide instructions how to remove, which will involve an abrasive to remove foreign material without damaging SS. Some people will get lucky convincing their SC to do it for them, but most will just keep whining about it or fix it themself.

I plan to BKF mine ASAP and keep laughing at everyone else worried about it.
