I might get rust I need to take care of. This is my opinion of why I might not buy the truck.
...You might need to wash the truck for it not to have spots from stuff in the air?

I don't know what to tell you, but that's true of literally everything. Including completely non-reactive glass.

This happens to ANY car transported by rail or stored near a rail yard. The solution would be wrapping cars during transport, like you see a lot of higher-end mfgs do... but that ain't Tesla. They will say it's environmental, provide instructions how to remove, which will involve an abrasive to remove foreign material without damaging SS. Some people will get lucky convincing their SC to do it for them, but most will just keep whining about it or fix it themself.

I plan to BKF mine ASAP and keep laughing at everyone else worried about it.
agreed, I just got a mini stainless steel stove at TEMU, at $9, comes with protective sheet. why not for $100k product?

From the horses mouth:

Hopefully the only significant source of "free iron" is rail transport.
Otherwise the people talking about whack-a-mole bird poop, water droplets, and free iron are going to get out of control.

The surface contamination can probably be dispatched by rubbing with a lime wedge and wiping down with alcohol.

...on that note, I'm gonna go make a margarita

Bearded Tesla Guy had a great video about this today:
Great video, but does 'IT' just come back every week? The clear coat applied with a couple of hours finish work in an earlier video might solve the problem... Who knows yet!? There's a hundred thousand more reservations before my own hits. This channel will be a goldmine for information!!

It's anywhere with significant red dust, aging steel industrial structures, etc.

And yeah, if you want to keep your truck shiny, it's going to be whack a mole.

Because crap falls from the sky. Otherwise we'd never have to wash windows.

Great video, but does 'IT' just come back every week?
No, maybe, probably not? If it's more water spot than damage to the chromium nickel passivation, then yes, it'll come back. If it's an actual pit in the metal, yes, it'll come back.

But that's what the acid does, it grabs the free iron and leaves the nickel chromium behind. That's why you rinse it off.

The care of stainless is different than paint, yes. But its failure mode is much, much slower.

Drove from Florida a few days ago back to MT . I have rail dust, and a bit of of rust all over my rear end on my S chrome. Car is full PPF minus the chrome. Drive along a major rail as many know as you drive across Montana.

It is part of driving or being near rails.

Just mad it's on Drudge. It's a battle sometimes

Their regular rates of 2% bots seems... unlikely.

But X has gotten bot heavy lately. Trending topics full of botspam, interaction farming, replies of heavy accounts full of botspam replies, kissybots clogging notifications and so much moderation is automated now that hate groups are swarming even higher.

It's a mess. And don't get me started on how inconsistent their video is now.

Bot attacks have only gotten worse across any platform, tho.

I can't believe this topic is still alive; a real testament to how gullible some people are. These people fretting over rust spots think it's something unique to the unpainted stainless steel of the the Cybertruck. But here's a small sampling of links I found of people dealing with the exact same phenomenon on painted cars. I also found a lot of people with rusting body panels bubbling through the paint, but I am not including those. That is a more serious problem that a Cybertruck will never experience at all.

In any case, it's a lot easier to remove these rust specs from the "Hard Frickin Steel" stainless steel panels on the Cybertruck than it is to remove it from the delicate clear coats used on cars normal people drive. Read 'em and weep:

EDIT: Since this post is getting traction from news outlets, I'd like to up front state my finding. I do not believe this is embedded corrosion of the panels, but rather spots from an outside contaminant adhering to the exterior. The spots cannot be removed with soap and water, so the Tesla detail wash that happens before delivery could not have removed these spots. Barkeeper's Friend "Soft" remove the spots easily, and wish a soap+water wash and ammonia-free glass cleaner wipe down, the truck looks amazing and spot free. I further applied 2 coats of Iron Decon, but I saw no indication of remaining iron contamination.

EDIT Continued: I attached 2 more photos below: one with the spots, and one after the Barkeeper's Friend application. If the panels further corrode, we'll see, but for now I'm satisfied that this is not corrosion of the panel.

If you're interested, my truck is available for rental on Turo:

Tesla Cybertruck AWD 2024 rental in Fontana, CA by William D. | Turo

I received my AWD Cybertruck on February 1, 2024. Throughout the LA rain, I noticed the corrosion was forming on the metal like other people have noted, so I decided to start documenting it and bringing it to Tesla's attention. I figured it was already on their radar, but I want it attended to under the warranty. So I made a service appointment for this morning.

The truck was taken to the back and the exterior was washed, just to verify the corrosion was not specks of dirt.

Speaking with someone at the facility, they told me 1) they have a procedure/guidance for how to fix it, but 2) they don't have the tools on hand, nor have they done this repair before. They documented the corrosion, and told me they'll give me a call next month when the tools have arrived and they can perform the service/repair.

The Cybertruck has 381 miles on it, and has spent much of the 11 days in my custody parked in front of my house. Cold weather, rain, and some direct sunlight later, I attached a few photos of the corrosion spots and a video. Seems like it's much more prominent on the top metal that rises above the truck bed moreso than anywhere else, but the spots are definitely everywhere in the metal.

Pardon my gross hands and fading nail polish...

Could it have been rail dust? I work at a car dealer and cars transported by trains and even Trucks get covered with this micro metal dust. It adheres to the paint . Especially noticeable on white cars after washed. It's dust from metal on metal train wheels, semi truck and trailer brake dust, rusty trailers bouncing around. etc. We use a clay bar to get it off paint with ease. Makes the paint smooth as well. None the less I am sure you got Tesla's attention and they probably reached out.

They didn't contact me, I made the service appointment about it.

At this time, I think it was just rail dust.
It comes from all kinds of sources including iron brake discs whenever someone brakes hard. It can also come from factory smokestacks although I don't know exactly which industrial processes release particles with iron in it.

We have three white Model 3's, they have never had the problem, probably because I periodically rub some wax on them after washing. Wax makes the surface smooth and makes it easy to rinse particles off.

Good to hear you think it is rail dust, PLEASE take some before and after pics and fill us in on what Tesla does during your service appointment. Hopeful they can get it looking great for you with minimal turnaround time.
