I've been waiting for my Cybertruck Texas title after paying cash. It's only been a little over two weeks, which I know is typically early for title processing times. However, I called the DMV today to check the status and they couldn't find any paperwork submitted by Tesla for my VIN. Does anyone have any insights on this?

I'm wondering if Tesla's status as a non-dealer in Texas affects how they handle title issuance. Alternatively, it's possible that the paperwork got lost or is still held up at the Tesla "dealership". Given the chaotic delivery process, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a mistake somewhere along the line. Any knowledge or insight on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I live in DFW and have bought 2 Teslas.

Both times they sent me all the paper work for registering them and I had to take it to the county title office. Register and pay the taxes.

The papers came in a fedex package.

Pretty sure that's still the way it works, but it's been a couple years since the last one.

I think they change the policy. Tesla says they handle registration and titling now.

If you paid Tesla the fees and taxes, that’s probably true then.

I’m in CA so probably different but registration with Tesla has always been slow. Around a month from purchase to the arrival of state papers and plates (that’s consistent across the 3 teslas Ive owned since 2018).

By comparison, my in laws bought a Mercedes same day I received my X in January—their plates arrived in a week and mine took a month. I also was able to check and showed no pending registration until a week before I received everything.

So, after waiting for over an hour to speak with Tesla, I learned that they use a third party in the state of Texas to process vehicle titles and registrations. They informed me that it's a two-month process, which explains why they provide two 30-day temporary tags. (Side note: they initially provided only one, but the representative sent me the second one after our phone call.) Tesla keeps notes in their system about when title documents are sent off to the third-party processing company. Surprisingly, after 18 days, Tesla hadn’t even sent mine to the processing company yet. Once Texas receives the information from Tesla’s third party, the title should arrive in 30 days. It's quite annoying, but then again, anything with Tesla tends to be.

The title for my Cybertruck in TX took a while, more than 30 days. It didn't seem to be an issue.

You are expecting WAY too much out of a government organization.
I'm guessing you haven't bought new cars before. I've never had tags in a timely manner.

Here in Georgia, we can get Alterative Fuel tags and with one, you can get free access to some tollways.

But, that means...
  • I have to wait for Tesla to send the info to the third party,
  • The third party process the package and send to the state/county.
  • The state/county process the registration
  • The county automatically mails the tag to me.
  • Then I have to take the tag back to the DMV (it's a standard plate)
  • Exchange the standard tag for the Alternative fuel tag
  • Get a new Toll Pass and show them the tag information and they will then enable free access.
