Nice video of the Rivian. But I'm hopelessly disappointed by the last quote of the video.

The R1T isn't just an incredibly fast and impressive 3-second 0 to 60 street pickup with racing suspension right now. It also does things off-road that no other pickup could even attempt.
Um... Are you sure about that? No other pickup? I get you haven't tested the Cybertruck yet but I'm betting Cybertruck will match and better anything Rivian can do.

I'd be curious what it can do that another truck can't attempt.

It's an interesting point that comparing a CT to a Rivian is essentially comparing a two (or three) motor truck with differentials, to a four motor truck with no differentials. It seems like this is where the Rivian really shines.

I don't know enough about Tesla's traction control system to really know if the CT could possibly perform as well as a four motor Rivian in the kind of terrain seen in this video. So, what say you, CTOC hive mind? How do you think the CT will compare to what you're seeing in this video? Specifically, crawling up steep uneven dirt with huge rock obstacles. Is there any chance a 2 motor CT can perform as well as a four motor Rivian?

My volt could navigate 85% of the roads shown in the clip. Only a few rocky gaps would be out.

I'm really looking forward to Tesla's answer to Rivian's posturing. Someday, hopefully not too far from now, I would think Tesla will be showing off the CT's off road capabilities in serious terrain. I believe the off road capabilities of the CT are a point of pride for Elon.

That's fair but I think the context was what the truck can conquer in nature that no other truck can attempt.
I agree with you.

As to the extreme expressed:

It also does things off-road that no other pickup could even attempt.
Seems like they are saying that Rivian can successfully accomplish things that other trucks are not even capable of trying (successfully or as a failure). That is a REALLY high bar to hit. Not sure how one could reach that conclusion. Get the right idiot driver and they will attempt even the craziest scenario in the most inappropriate vehicle. Sure they may not make it. Maybe not even survive. But attempt? Sure thing they will.

Now that Tesla has confirmed Cybertruck will have rear wheel steering.

Components for front steering & rear could be the same.

I think Tesla will respond to Rivian R1T 4WD Quad motor with a Cybertruck 4WD Quad motor.

Possibly yes. In which case there would also be opportunity to have yet another price tier for quad-motor. But the original design already had crazy specs for the tri-motor. I’m no engineer but I do wonder what the added motor weight would take away in performance to get whatever the extra motor power and control might provide. Originally Tesla seems to have disregarded the need for a fourth motor. So there better be some overwhelming reason to add the extra motor beyond just marketing.

I envision a future commercial. CT drives up moderate terrain. Pulls Rivian out of a ditch. Tether charges the Rivian. The Rivian heads down and the CT continues up on difficult terrain.

No dialogue.

Tesla Cybertruck logo at the end.

(Tesla, free CT for the marketing pitch ??)

I am nothing if not literal.

But I don't think that's really an appropriate bar. You can make many of these traverses in two-wheel drive. It's all about planning, making sure your weight is on the drive wheels.

Having four-wheel control is just that much more incremental benefit. The Rivian can totally take things where there would be inconsistent grip from side to side without a bit of worry or need to balance or lock a differential. It will smoothly go from one to the other.
