After reading about all of the trials and tribulations involved in installing power share, and the exorbitant cost, I decided it's just not worth it. So here is my solution. A 50A male plug ($16.99) and a 50A Male to bare wire power cord ($19.50). On the side of my garage there is a 50A RV power outlet box and I have a 50A RV power extension cord. If I lose power - shut off main 200A breaker and 50A outlet box breaker, plug CT into extension cord and power outlet box, turn on CT outlet and turn on 50A RV outlet breaker.

Yes this is potentially dangerous.
Yes my location is secure.
Yes I should install a lockout box and plan to do so

Now I have to come up with $2500 worth of debris to purchase from the Tesla shop.

Not the safest but in case of emergency does the job. just make sure to tun off main house breaker before connecting.

Of course this is for emergencies. And everyone's comfort level and ability will be different. But personally for me it works. I built my last house by myself. And that includes electric service installation. And the location, RV outlet and electric service are secure. There is no modification to the house, the 50A RV outlet is already installed and the main breaker will be off. So while there is a non-zero chance I will electrocute myself it is as close to zero that I can imagine. So the argument that I will kill myself or someone is not really valid. Are people here gun owners? I would be just as likely to accidentally load my Ruger, accidentally turn off the safety, accidentally stick the barrel in my mouth and accidentally pull the trigger.

Again, this is not for everyone. But for me personally, it is a good option in emergencies without donating 7K+ to Qmerit. I wouldn't bother for brief outages - we get one every couple of years. But occasionally we are spanked by a hurricane, and to have the option to not loose the contents of my refrigerator and freezer and power a few lighting circuits is a good thing. Especially since I have family medications that require refrigeration.

So again, for me personally this is a good option on the risk/reward scale.

It's not code, but I will probably do the same. Many do the same with gasoline powered generators. It's not a big deal if you are an engineer or electrician. We have a ~ 4 hour outage every 3-4 years. If our utility ever allows V2G, I'll do it to code of course.

The risk is minimal but like you said non-zero. I think people are expressing concern for the safety of the linemen not yourself. A lot of people down here do it too and yes the linemen always get nervous when they hear a generator kick on in the distance.

The outlets are a bit less power at 9.6KW versus 11.5KW for Powershare. I have my whole house on the gateway and I'm over 9.6KW at times. For me it was worth it for the ease of operation and a bit more power.

I have same step up now to power house with a 10k natural gas generator, I did install the required circuit breaker “lockout” on main panel. ($15 kit off Amazon and 15 minutes of work). I powered my house for 6 days during Ida hurricane outage.
I picked up my CT yesterday, not looking forward to install quote, there is only one approved Tesla installer in New Orleans, they quoted me $18k to install one Power Wall 3 (included PW). This is with meter and main panel on back of garage, I too have build houses, did all my own electrical Plus my brother is an electrician BUT of course Tesla isn’t going to ship Gateway with an “approved” installer. I will go through the quotation process but not looking forward to it.

I have the lockout kits on my 2 different residences for generator isolation. This forces the safest solution, and it also makes sure "anyone" (not just the person with the knowledge of the setup) who tries to tie-in the generator is also forced to follow the isolation. Just because "you" know how to do it doesn't mean that anyone trying to do it in your place will do it correctly and safely. Yes, it's for the safety of the user and most importantly the linemen. Backfeed is no joke.

I did the same previously using my F-150 Lightning and now have the backup cable ready for the CT. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you know what you are doing (turn off the main utility breaker etc.), it saves a ton of effort and money. Of course it will be a hassle and risky to do on a regular basis, but for occasional emergency use cases is the main purpose.
