My Delivery Experience- updated "a small rust identified"

Thought its time to create one for all delivery experience. Here is mine. RN 11281 ADW order 12/8, VIN 1/20, Delivery 2/7 Sunnyvale, CA.

Took a delivery yesterday under a light rain. I was a little concern about a finish quality after I saw pics(scratches) from a delivery at other NorCal location.

- rear panel gap. left side was OK, but right side was a little bigger gap: I compared with two other CTs on the lot and found all had the same gap, actually one of them had much bigger gap on the right side. but looks like these are within spec
- hard to see from pic, but internal white materials was not finished flat, a kind of waving, maybe after long rain with moisture?
- also extremely hard to tell from pic, some part of steel panels were dirty, its a little whitey like a dust surfaced. Sales rep called service person to wipe it. He brought some spray cleaner and wiped, but did not go away. he looked tired of wiping(maybe from all rains), shaking his head and told me that was best he could do. Maybe I can clean it with special formular, but I confirmed my decision to wrap was right.
- this is my first Tesla. it was not easy to operate under rain, using wipers, AC, not using back mirror. so glad to bring model X owner with me. I recommend the same if CT is the first Tesla for you
- extremely strong re-gen brake. I believe I can change the setting.
- a noise such as "Gigigigigi---" when turning handles at very low speed like parking. Lets see if this goes away after a while
- a noise from motor ( or hood, or ?) was a kind of big... on the high way at 65-70miles/h, also noise from tire was a little more than expected, but this might be inevitable.

There was no ceremony, no big red ribbon at delivery, but overall experience was good.

Oh, one last thing- should we expect 3 heads-lion-logo on the back for FS ADW? there is none other than "Foundation" letters on the side. I do not need it but curious since we pay 20K for that logo

My only concern is that noise, appreciated if other owners can comment on it.

Just found a small orange rust yesterday.. only one on the frunk area, but concerning since its only a couple of weeks after build. In the past I left a brand new stainless steel plate (for hood) in the back yard for a year, then this orange rust were all over. Hope CT wont be like that. another reason for me to wrap.

Unlikely that this is corrosion or oxidation. The CT will not require a wrap, just as DeLoreans did not require wraps.

This is most likely rail dust. It should be removeable with a clay bar.

That rust speck looks on top of the stainless. Just pick it off with a small stainless pick or something. It's likely from a grinder, and not actually part of the stainless surface. But anyway, the idea is basically to not rub it in more, then just lightly clean the surface (using almost anything but windex) and it should be good to go.

Difficult for us to tell based on that pic but if I zoom in it looks like that orange flake is sitting on top of the panel, not in the panel. Could be rail dust, pollen, dirt, etc.

I imagine (and hope) it buffs out pretty easily. That said, I am thinking snow/salt areas will not be ideal for this until wrapped. I guess same could be true to being close to the ocean.

Keep that baby clean. Are you gonna wrap it eventually?

yes. I got a quote for wrapping and tint with ceramic coating. most likely do all next week

I did not want to make it worse, so did not use any serious remover, just use soft material to wipe it out, but never go away. it's not pollen, dirt. it's a rust but not sure it's on surface or from inside. I will wrap it. so won't do anything any further.

It's not the panel rusting, it's a surface contaminant. Don't baby the hard frickin' steel, just scrub it off and give it a quick polish with some wax or something so more stuff doesn't stick to the surface. You need to scrub off all those minerals anyway. What splashed on it to leave all those white minerals anyway? It looks like something caustic. Scrub it off of there.

I actually think a wrap might prevent oxygen from getting to the surface of the metal which could be a bad thing. Ironically, oxides protect stainless steel from oxidation. The chromium in stainless steel reacts with oxygen in the air to produce a protective chromium oxide layer across the surface. Although very thin, this layer is what protects the metal from corrosion and why stainless steel doesn't turn orange while mild steel flashes orange as soon as it gets exposure to air and water.

hummmm. not sure if I understood you 100%, but Tesla provides wrapping service as well, so it's should be ok solution, I believe.

As long as you are aware they offer wrap to change the appearance, not to prevent corrosion!

Where are you going for wrap and tint and would you be willing to share prices? Planning on ceramic or crystalline on sides and windshield. Just need a truck...

I am going to wrap at Silicon Valley AutoSpa at Fremont. I asked about a rust, they said they apply "rust protection coating" to avoid future damaging for all vehicles before wrap. I selected PUREppf satin bullet for wrapping. can not wait !
