your messages are always so humorous. Hope others have already told you that!
My humor loses its luster after about 20 years.

but wraps are definitely not a hidden scheme to cover up a faulty metal, IMHO
I don’t think it’s a ‘hidden’ scheme

And I wasn’t taking as sufficient the existence of wraps alone.

Instead, Tesla offering both wraps and ceramic coatings is I think sufficient implicit acknowledgement by Tesla that there will be sufficient numbers of customers concerned about the aesthetic of the stainless (or the maintenance of the aesthetic) that Tesla feels they should get into the wrap/ceramic coating business.

That’s before we talk about lines of ‘special’ CT cleaners co-signed by Tesla.

In fairness, I have the benefit of info that you don’t, which perhaps makes this implied admission more apparent to me than it is for you.

And, I don’t want to leave the point overstated. There is as of yet no indication of any sort of corrosion or chemical reaction that would affect the structural integrity of the panels. That I find unlikely unless someone is bathing their truck in chlorine or salt.

Instead only that aesthetically any formulation of bare stainless is going to behave in ways that run contrary to typical customer expectations. Either in terms of how it looks, or in terms of effort required to maintain the look.

And that, yes, this set of facts are obvious and material enough to Tesla that it is part of the reason Tesla is offering OEM wraps, and all of the reason it will offer ‘special’ Tesla ceramic coatings backed by a Tesla warranty.

Not to mention, that the myriad of ways and conditions under which these aesthetic effects will occur are only starting to present themselves as the first few trucks enter the wild. For example, why Tesla is currently and internally fretting over how to deal with this rail dust issue, in terms of changing their procedures around how Cybertrucks are delivered (eg possibly CT-specific transport films) and/or prepped before delivery (eg CT-specific delivery prep procedures).

All-in-all, there is a reason why paint and clear coats were invented and ubiquitous in auto finishing, and they weren’t limited to corrosion protection. That approach had benefits and downsides.

Bare stainless will also have benefits and down sides. And different customers will have different opinions about how this balance sums.

or as @CyberGus, with his years of experience with a stainless steel vehicle summarized:

Got a stainless double-sink, maybe with a drying rack on one side? Pull the rack and compare the two sides. There’s no rust, but they look… different.

If you need every square inch to look perfect, or even uniform, then coatings are for you.
Tesla gets that, and is offering solutions to minimize complaints and maximize marketability

Just picked up my Cybertruck today. The advisor specifically mentioned the cybertrucks develop orange rust marks in the rain and that required the vehicle to be buffed out. I know I heard the story of never take out your Delorean in the rain but I just never read anything about rust and Cybertrucks. All in all smooth delivery. The first 10 min of driving, the vehicle was pulling hard to the right…I turned around and went back to the service center thinking there was an issue. They scheduled me to a different service center near where I live but after putting on some more miles the pull went away.
An interesting observation. I have an Apple News subscription, don’t judge lol, and have read three articles from three different news organizations with information coming directly out of this very thread. Credit given to the Cybertrucks Owners Club talking about owners reporting that their trucks are rusting. All three seemed clickbaity with the titles and the beginning of the article but eventually got around to mentioning rail dust, other possible causes and possible ways to remove it.

Just a heads up if you didn’t know. Makes sense to use this forum as a resource considering the size and concentration of owners sharing their experiences.

When I get mine, since I am a NanoPro dealer, I'll be coating mine in Borophene coating which is the only coating on the market at this time that I know of in the ceramic coating world, made to correctly bond to bare metal like Stainless.
Interested in the Borophene ceramic coating as DIY. Ceramic done yourself is easier than waxing imo.
You win interesting word of the day contest, had to search Borophene. Looks like a potential good option, look forward to seeing your CT done. Since you are a dealer, what's the difference between the 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 versions?
I'd suggest watching this video and reading all the comments.

Every image that has been posted in this thread is indistinguishable from any flat piece of shiny metal.
Really?

Picked up CT on 1/22 and noticed an orangish tint and spots I couldn’t remove on the hood. I hit it with a pass of Bar keepers Friend and Windex and it completely cleaned up the surface.

First pic is a closeup, second is halfway done. Third is the completed hood.

So far after cleaning it, it’s held up well. I have used Windex a couple times to remove bird stains and spots from the tree I park under.

I do not mean to be a Suspicious Alloysius, and I accuse nobody of anything.
But for the purposes of clarity it would be good if pictures of any corrosion could include design details of the truck in the photo.

I like your conspiratorial mind :) there are a couple posts on X that have zoomed out/in pics with the rust on them.

Where are the pics? Where is the rust?
Only about a dozen posts in this thread and others, scroll through all the pages in this thread and other rust thread and you will see all the pics your heart desires, and more.
