"The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers. The term is used for motor vehicles and trains." (Wikipedia).

So this weight includes the vault cargo 3500lbs? If that's true then empty weight could still be within 6000lbs.

Yeah this seems to be the case. Pretty cool. Cybertruck rules

Good info. For me personally, this doesn’t make any difference. I’m buying this for its price to range ratio, interior size when compared to other electric vehicles, and design. The fact that its a truck is just icing on the cake.

The title of this thread is very misleading imo.
It's 8,500 GVWR.
"While we have not yet begun production of the Cybertruck, we expect it to have a towing capacity of 7,500-14,000+ lbs., and it should very likely qualify as a 'Class 2B-3 medium-duty vehicle.'"

I totally agree. The statement speak about the towing capacity in Class 2B-3, not about the weight of the Cybertruck.
During the unveil, Musk said that the weight is comparable to F-150.
Having a weight over 7,500Lbs can create a lot of problems in Europe because of regulations.

Exactamente. En Europa no debe exceder 7700 lbs. (3500 Kg) Por encima de esa cifra, el marketing sería mucho más complicado.

Could someone who understands CA state regulation see if this may change rebate program? Looking over 2020 proposals i saw one spot that said medium duty trucks may be eligible for up to 10k rebate for 2020+? That would be great, see car class reduced to 2K state rebate. Could this be a reason Tesla is asking for this category based on lift / towing capacity?

Check carefully. The funding for that program dried up long ago and they are not taking 'waiting list' applications.

I had a suburban 3/4 T with 6.5 turbo-diesel and a sierra with same spec… So, I was very satisfied with those trucks… except the cost of replacement of the fuel injection pump at each 60,000 miles… very costly… I hope to get the same satisfaction with the new cybertruck...
that I ordered one 3 motors for Québec and another one motor for our home in Fl...!!!
I hear the fishing’s nice in Quebec

This would put it in the N2 EU vehicle class.

That would make all the news stories about not being able to sell it in europe most likely wrong.

Wouldn't that more than likely put the Ford F150E in the same situation. So this F150E would actually be a F250E class wise. And does anyone really care? It's a truck and it can haul and tow big heavy things. It will either have good range and be in the heavier class or have minimal range and be in the lower class.

So, instead of comparing it to the F150, let's compare it to the F250:

XL package is too low to compare to a Tesla, but here's the XL Numbers:
F250 XLT Crew Cab 4x2: $38,890
F250 XLT Crew Cab 4x4: $41,690

Probably the best starting point, XLT:
F250 XLT Crew Cab 4x2: $44,575
F250 XLT Crew Cab 4x4: $47,370

In my mind, really the Tesla comparison is the Lariat, so if I'm comparing it to a Ford , I'm going to compare it to the closest Ford.
F250 Lariat Crew Cab 4x2: $50,525
F250 Lariat Crew Cab 4x4: $53,710

Trimotor really doesn't have an equal for Ford, but here's the top two models:
F250 Platinum Crew Cab 4x4: $67,490
F250 Limited Crew Cab 4x4: $83,600

So, I bet Ford DOES NOT want you to compare it to a F250.

In a letter to the California Air and Resources Board (dated Dec 9) Tesla states:

"While we have not yet begun production of the Cybertruck, we expect it to have a towing capacity of 7,500-14,000+ lbs., and it should very likely qualify as a 'Class 2B-3 medium-duty vehicle.'"

This statement tells us the Cybertruck's expected gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) will be between 8,501-10,000 lbs as that is the weight range of Class 2B medium duty pickups.

GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is defined as: the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers.

Other 2B medium duty pickups on the market include the Ford F-250, Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and the Ram 2500. This means that the pickup which the Cybertruck has been compared to most - the Ford F-150 will not be the Cybertruck's direct competitor, at least by class designation.

For comparison, here are the specs of the Cybertruck, F-250, Ram 2500 and Silverado 2500:

Cybertruck
Max payload: 3,500 lbs
Max tow rating: 14,000+ lbs

2020 F-250 (gasoline)
Max payload: 4,260 lbs
Max tow rating: 19,500 lbs

2020 F-250 (diesel)
Max payload: 3,940 lbs
Max tow rating: 22,800 lbs

2020 Ram 2500 (gasoline)
Max payload: 4,050 lbs
Max tow rating: 19,780 lbs

2020 Silverado 2500HD (gasoline)
Max payload: 3,979 lbs
Max tow rating: 14,500 lbs

2020 Silverado 2500HD (diesel)
Max payload: 3,715 lbs
Max tow rating: 18,500 lbs

Classification GVWR Example
Class 1 0 – 6,000 lbs Toyota Tacoma
Class 2a 6,001 – 8,500 lbs Ford F-150
Class 2b 8,501 – 10,000 lbs Ram HD 2500
Class 3 10,001 – 14,000 lbs Chevy HD 3500
Class 4 14,001 – 16,000 lbs Ford F-450 Chassis
Class 5 16,001 – 19,500 lbs Chevy HD 5500
Class 6 19,501 – 26,000 lbs Ford F-650
Class 7 26,001 – 33,000 lbs Ford F-750
Class 8 33,001+ lbs Semi truck
Correction:

Cybertruck
Max payload: 2,500 lbs
Max tow rating: 11,000 lbs

Would that make it a light-duty vehicle? Whatever the equivalency of a Ford F-150 is.
