Tesla should contact customers in RESERVATION # ORDER, regardless of motor choice... right?

There are so many conflicting opinions about which orders will be shipping first and how the motor choice you made years ago will affect when you're actually able to take delivery.

The latest assumption is that somebody who placed a dual motor on the very first day will actually wait longer than somebody who placed a tri-motor months later. That's crazy.

A lot of people say that the best option is to change your order to a tri-motor, but others warn that unless it's done right, there's a risk that you'll end up at the end of the line. That's crazy too... especially since the original order page made no mention that the tri-motor would be first.

So, rather than speculate, I tweeted to Elon Musk that they should call people in order, regardless of their choice in 2019... and ask them if they wanted to stick with the dual and wait... or change to a tri-motor and take delivery sooner.

If you got a call today from Tesla, asking you to choose:

1) Keep your existing dual motor order and wait 6-12 months longer.
or
2) Change it to a tri-motor... would you do it? I know I would, and there are probably others that would.

Perhaps if enough of us simply asked Tesla to consider this, they would make a ton of extra money from people like me who would chose to upgrade.

Considering widespread experience with previous models, it's more than obvious by now that Tesla does not manufacture all configuration trim variants simultaneously.

If you're really apt to change your trim selection based on delivery possibly being a few months or a year earlier, then you are likely being emotional instead of practical. The Cybertruck will last quite a few years for owners. During those long years of ownership if you are continually happy with your choice of dual-motor, tri-motor, or single-motor, that should be all that matters. Four years after delivery, you won't even care about how long you waited for delivery, but you will certainly still be caring about which trim and motor options you chose at the time.

I don't think its Tesla's job to second guess everyone's preference in their reservation. If you want to change your trim options for practical reasons, then all you have to do is go online and change your reservation (price increases for certain features might affect this change though). If you're uncertain about exact details, call Tesla and ask them. But I don't think Tesla should be calling 1.2 million people to ask them if they're (sure) about their reservation configuration preference. Now that is what would be 'just crazy'.

The best guess is that they do a combination of trim and geographic region. This is based off the latest release of the MY.

I'm not suggesting that they call 1.2 million people on the phone. What I'm suggesting is that simply follow the original sequence, especially since those who ordered on day one were not told our motor selection could mean an additional year of waiting.

They could simply send messages to those with the lowest numbers (those ordered when tri-motor would ship sooner) asking them to decide. A simple email stating timelines, and a way to confirm our choice based on those timelines. Some will respond with a change, others will ignore it and stay where they are.

I've seen quite a few people say they've already made changes to their order... some said the sequence didn't change, others say it did.

I called Tesla of NJ last week and asked them if they knew which would ship first. They didn't have an official answer, but confirmed the tri motor would be most likely. I asked if it would be worthwhile to change my order. They said it would definitely move my position to the end of the line... from 86,xxx to well over 1.2 million.

I just find it funny that somebody who reserved a dual motor on the 1st day needs to wait longer than somebody who waited nearly a year to make a tri-motor reservation.

As for why I'm not thrilled with waiting. My current truck is a 2016 F-150 with 30,000 miles left on a 100,000 mile warranty. I don't want to keep it much longer, so it frustrates me that a choice I made in 2019 determines whether I can replace it in 2022 or 2023.

Sadly, at least for my money, Tesla goes primarily by reservation number within the context of geography and deliveries. And by the way, currently both Dual and Tri motor variants are expected to be manufactured first. Either way, when your reservation comes up then you can make the final determination of which variant you want.

I also think there must have been some miscommunication in your call with Tesla. As long as you hold your low reservation number you are going to get the call well before me.

I spoke to two different NJ Tesla offices. Technically, one is considered a "dealer", the other just essentially a store. (NJ gave Tesla a hard time because they objected to the idea of a manufacturer selling direct to the public, so they created a "Dealership" in another town).

I was very specific. I said I heard that tri-motor reservations were rumored to be first. They both said they have no official word, but said the company tends to ship higher priced variants first.

When I asked the first office if I could switch to the tri-motor without losing my place in line, they said they weren't allowed to because they technically are just a store, so they gave me the number of the "dealership".

The dealership once again repeated the opinion about the tri motor being first, and when I asked if I could change to the tri-motor to speed up my delivery, they warned me that it would essentially cancel the original position, and create a new reservation at the bottom of the list.

I think that they are full of it. The general consensus is that the reservation number is sacrosanct. Let me ask you a question. If you orderd a Dual motor very early on, and it has been widely advertised, by Elon himself, that the Dual motor will be the first one off the line, why are you worried? You are talking with people you think (and have every right to believe) know what they are talking about, but the folks at 'any' auto dealership know as much as a nail about anything. You should sit tight. I do not know about your warranty on your other car. That is a separate issue. But the Dual will be the first off the line and even if the Tri is the first it won't be by much and they would, as @Crissa often mentions, surely offer you the option of trading up at that time. You are entitled to your concern but I think you are in good shape.

I hope so. What set me off is the "Google Spreadsheet" everyone is using. When you look at the estimated dates, all the dual motors... even at the very top of the list are WAY later than the tri-motor versions that came months later.

In the end, it comes down to rumors vs reality, and no official communication about how our original selection will play a role in delivery dates.

People who ordered on day one were told a completely different story about which would be first. The latest "official" info only mentions that the single motor will be at least a year later (contrary to what was there on day one)... leading you to think dual and tri will both ship somewhat together, but as I said, that Google Spreadsheet and all the online chatter say the dual will be much later.

A few months ago I changed from Dual to Tri motor on my reservation. My res number stayed the same for whatever that's worth.

I agree that clarity from Tesla would be great, but I don't think they're really keeping any info from us, I genuinely would place my bets that they simply don't know yet, and therefore don't want to say anything.

If "Tesla goes primarily by reservation number within the context of geography and deliveries."
Set up temporary residency in Austin, Texas and just change the location of your purchase. :sneaky:

The thing about the spreadsheet is that it is an 'educated' guess. You put in your reservation number and other details and you get inserted into the spreadsheet. Then you go to another URL and put in your reservation number and it spits out a guess as to where in line you are and the estimated delivery. I am assuming that you did all that and got a delivery that you didn't like. I suspect that they set it up based on the original trim ordering of Single, Dual, and Tri motor variants. But Tesla later reversed the ordering to Tri, Dual, and Single, and more recently to Dual/Tri and Single. So it is possible that you shouldn't be following the spreadsheet either.

The only things that are certain are your reservation number and where you live. History shows that those are the determining factors anyway.

I would not change my reservations, just to get the ct a few months earlier. I was thinking before what I needed and i needed the most range, so i ordered the tri-motor. Even when the dual-motor comes first.??‍♂

My thoughts are Tesla should in the first 4-6 months really go by reservation number first. After that period then roll out to regions. The reasoning is that it creates a larger geographical exposure of people to the new vehicle (ie, advertising). Surprisingly there is an awful lot of folks that have no idea about this truck or what it looks like despite it being pretty available to see and read about on the internet.
