What did you pay for basic home charger installation?

Less the charger cost, what did you pay or what were you quoted for basic home charger installation?

Haven’t had it installed as of yet, but was quoted $2,250. Panel is in our basement. Wiring run would go up one floor through a wall, and then from the back middle of the garage to the front left-side of the garage. Approximately 50 feet of wire. I’ve already purchased a Tesla charger through Tesla, so the quote doesn’t include the charger itself.

I did this installation myself. I dug the trench from the power meter/panel inside the house, installed plastic conduit, installed a pressure treated 6x6 from my lumber pile, built a roof for it it with scrap lumber from my woodpile (I had to buy the copper flashing and cedar shingles) and installed the Wall Connector Tesla mailed me for free since I had a referral. Then I wired it up with a 60 amp breaker, 35 feet of AWG 6 wire, AWG 8 ground (only needed AWG 10 ground) and appropriate conduit hangers.

Cost of all the electrical equipment was less than $150 (if I had to buy the Wall Connector it would have been around $400 more). Cost to build the roof was around $200.

Note: The Wall connector is rated to be mounted on a bare post, out in the weather. I wanted a roof to shed tree debris and snow, to reduce time spent cleaning it. The structure is designed to last 50 years with minimal maintenance. The Wall Connector has been performing flawlessly for 5 years so far.

I’ve seen 4 responses for under $1,000. I know one was a DYI solution. Were the others in that cost range likewise DYI?
thanks.

I need to add the fact this quote was from a “Tesla certified” vendor found on their website. Which I guess is not necessarily required.

I may just get permits to do it myself. Haven’t decided yet.

For 125 feet of wire (empty conduit already run years ago ahead of getting an EV), I’ve been quoted between 1,400 and 2,200 (excluding the charger).

DIY $150 parts plus Tesla HPWC. If your house has contemporary main circuit panel and you have basic electrical knowledge and a strong safety awareness, the work is not difficult. Lots of videos online (check https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/feeds/)

I did my install a few years ago and checked/followed NEC code. Key points as mentioned by @HaulingAss :

60a circuit breaker
#4 AWG "THHN" wire for longer runs, #6 AWG ok for shorter runs. Green/ground can be one gauge thinner.
Conduit: one inch Schedule 40. Paint if exposed, for UV protection. THHN must be in conduit!

If uncomfortable with the connection to main panel, you can potentially save money by doing all rough wiring yourself + hire electrician to make final connection (and permits, etc.).

I can do it myself, except it’ll be a bit of a pain going up from the basement and through a wall into the garage. Just trying to decide if I want to mess with it because of permits and that pain I mentioned.

$618 for a 75-foot conduit run, wiring and installation.
This was the cost of having an electrician do it? That sounds pretty reasonable.

Yes DYI here. I installed both of the Wall Connectors we have in the garage. I will say that when I bought the wire in April of 2020 it was $364 for 70' 4/3 NM-B and I just checked, it is up to $674 for the same purchase. Wild how much that has gone up.

I always recommend to people to install one gauge larger (yes you will use more four letter words installing it) than what is called for. If you are installing an EV charger that only needs two "hot" wires and a ground spend the extra money for a cable that has three wires and a ground. If you ever change your mind later and want something like a NEMA 14-50 you can use the same wire.

Wow, that is a big increase!
Thanks for the tips.

Dont buy wire from Lowes or Home Depot ... buy from local electric supply ... I purchased from local electric store .. there was difference of about 500 $ in price ....

$500 difference in price is kind of meaningless without knowing how much wire you were buying. Most installs won't use anywhere near $500 of wire, so how could the difference be that much?

It would make more sense to state the price difference as a percentage. I have a hard time believing a local electronic supply would sell the same product for a lot cheaper than Home Depot, maybe 10 or 15% less, at most.

I do know that Home Depot has limited selection of wire. I think they carry the slightly more expensive wire for wet locations because it's rated for dry locations too. The electrical supply store would probably have the slightly less expensive wire for dry locations, if that's what you need.
