Any theories on why they extended the rear portion of the glass roof, which used to line up with the rear edge of the rear doors? (Aesthetically I liked it better before.)

Assuming this change doesn't add leg room in the backseat by moving the seats backwards (and therefore doesn't shorten the bed), I am wondering what is gained from an engineering perspective.

What's the point in worrrying about a prototype? We worried about the wiper and Elon told us it wouldn't be the production one. To me that means the Cyberrtruck is still a fluid concept in some ways.

Structurally, it's finished, so this is likely to not change.

Reasons it might have moved:
  • More space for the bend of the tonneau.
  • Better debris resistance for the tonneau.
  • Space for the midgate.
  • Better structural angles, better cracking resistance (like the move of the power inlet).
  • Better aero when the tonneau is open.

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea why. But to troll Ogre's refrigerator is a good idea,

Answer: To troll @Ogre when he wants to move refrigerators.

whether aero, structural or other would be swag. I will lay my bet down to act as a mini awning and to piss off those making campers for the truck.
Last thing you want to see is an anjry ogre.

Come to think of it, most people who see an angry ogre, it is the last thing.

It is a part of the truck where people have requested a mid-gate or pass through. So i'm going with that.

1. Maybe just to maximise the glass potential... more view.

2. Maximise the glass area to take more Solar (if the option is offered)

3. Making the glass longer may save some cost compared to S/ Steel.

If the extra 2 or 3 inches behind the seats is to allow room for the mid-gate mechanism, and the glass roof was extended to cover it, it seems to me that this necessarily means the truck bed got shorter.

I'm wondering if it was done to allow the rear seats to sit at more of an angle/less upright. Maybe they were uncomfortably upright/straight backed and needed to recline a bit more. Extending the roof would allow the seats and mid-gate to sit at an angle without taking much away from the bed.

....
No, does not necessarily mean that they shorthend the bed.

They could have made the cabin 2-3 inches longer and the frunk or the dash 2-3 inches shorter.

Those are all valid explanations. I am just tired of worrying about it when, if they offerred me just about any prototype they've been working on, I'd take it.

Great question and I'm also curious from an engineering standpoint too. Also, having seen the first render before I was blown away by its level of detail and accuracy.

I don't think they would need to shorten the bed drastically in order to package the mid-gate but I do like your idea of this design change allowing for the rear seat to recline. I've only ever sat in an F150 and Ridgeline. While there was a lot of leg-room, the inability to lean back and lounge didn't yield the benefits of the extra space as much as it should have.

To make the Cyberlander even less useful than it already is.

But more than likely to make the roll top cover shorter and take up less space when stored. And and maybe to make a pass through easier. Crossing fingers on the last one.

I figured the roof overlap was to make the roll up vault cover a little smaller so it would retract more so they could do a mid gate.
This is why. Can't believe all you folks talking about a wanting a midgate/pass-thru didn't come up with this already. The roll away tonneau cover can't go down under the floor/seats anymore so it must be housed in the extended roof area now.
