Actually there are many stories out there where Tesla forces you to update. It’s not an option.
I have seen stories like this but there is always a 'but' if you do not connect the car to wifi, it cannot download updates

Me too. I just hope that’s they manufacture a MCU that is upgradable and brand new for the CT. That way my 2023 CT Tri will not be outdated by 2025.

I think that no matter what it comes with, within two years something 'new & improved' will be offered.

That's just the way it is. As you have experienced.
This is so true. My wife and I are seriously considering getting a Y now. And I'm having the back of my head voices saying:
"QC will be better next year"
"They might switch to better batteries soon"
"What if they lower prices again right after I buy?"

But I find comfort (yes, actual comfort HAHA) in knowing that in August of 2021 I would have the same questions.

I hear your frustration about all of this, and I think I understand the question better now. You are asking whether we [all] want the computer (or other key components) to be upgradable in our expensive new truck. I know that I certainly want it to be plug updatable. I do not mind so much paying for upgrades but to have the thing become disfunctional due to updates, when the skin and batteries (and likely the motors) will outlast my lifetime would be an unacceptable affront. My understanding (very limited experience so far) is that Tesla now has upgradable computers. HW2 owners seem able to upgrade to HW3. I just hope that Tesla continues along these lines.

I might add that I am on my second Lexus and nothing about the computer system has ever been upgradable. I was able to upgrade the maps in the navigation system but it cost me hundreds of dollars and hours at the shop. Tesla is way ahead of the pack in that way.

They are technically upgradeable, even my hw1 could be upgraded to hw2 for about 2500. Personally, after 10 years of ownership, I think that is a totally acceptable price to pay considering the only other serviceable parts are brakes and tires!

Could you dispose of your boat to me?
LOL, I guess you are referring to the boat in my profile photo. That's NOT my boat. It's actually Stars & Stripes, one of Dennis Connor's America's Cup boats.

There comes a point in time when the software advances become so extreme and push the boundaries of the hardware so far that yes, I can see a need to replace a MCU at some point. At this point you have to ask yourself if you want the latest and greatest options that are available in the new software or not. If you are perfectly content with the features you have, there should be no reason for you to be forced or feel forced to upgrade. Also at times newer hardware/MCU's are so vastly more powerful than the previous version that it can create software features to be developed that could not previously be done on older hardware.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with how Tesla is doing it. Yes the car runs on software and after a certain number of years, the hardware might start to become a bottleneck. The same thing happens with phones, computers, equipment at my work, and now cars. Some products are have easily interchangeable parts like desktop computers and some don't like laptops and phones. At least the MCU in the Tesla can be upgraded without replacing the vehicle.

On the otherhand, Tesla is now putting gaming computers with amazing processors in their luxury vehicles (fingers crossed for the Cybertruck). With a gaming computer built in to the actual vehicle, we will also have internal storage, larger graphic cards, and more processing power. It's likely that with all these parts and the possibility that one might fail, that they will be more interchangeable.

If the Cybertruck does recieve the gaming computer hardward; even if an entire unit needs to be replaced to upgrade, I don't see functions like vehicle controls and regular vehicle software being a problem with a system that is as powerful as a gaming computer, if anything the gaming feature might get a little outdated after 5 or so years.

You can never have the most up to date operating system due to planned obsolescence. Every smart software engineer has the next version ready in his or hers bag of tricks

Are the updates reversible? Say I opt for every update and everything goes great for 3 years and the next update seems to bog everything down...can I revert back a day and essentially undo that update?

I don't think Tesla updates will be reversible after you the download. Tesla has come a long way since they started and most of that has been software advancements. The plan that they have even in the short run is supposed to greatly improve upon the current system as well as bring out new features. A lot of these updates also included minor changes to the current safety systems and I don't think Tesla will ever allow someone to undo an upgrade to a safety feature and I don't think you could just keep the safety feature but not the rest of the update.

One thing that is hinted at coming in the future is the app store in cars. Once Tesla has it's own apps for a lot of different programs, it would allow more customization. If you don't want a game, or you don't need spotify, you will probably have the option to delete that app. Then Tesla updates could be strictly for vehicle controls and driving software, while you can pick and choose everything else that you want.

No it's not.

Seems you don't understand. Perhaps you are a non-Tesla Owner.

It's fine with me if the 2020 cars are better than the 2017 cars. We are all used to that. Ford, Chevy, Merc... what ever.

However, this is different.

It's one thing to buy a Tesla and be told "this is as old as the car will ever be", due to over the air updates. Well that is not true, they are worse after the updates. You have an old MCU, and Tesla forces you to update the car, and the updates remove functions of the car that you PAID for, and to make matters worse, the updates slow down the electronics of the car to the point where the screen freezes, and then you have to pay for an upgrade, which as it turns out only comes with a 2 year warranty. The entire car is software controlled. its not like we can elect not to use the screen.

This crap happened with Apple with them throttling the phones so you would need to buy a new one. They got sued for that too. A Tesla isn't a phone. We should not be forced to upgrade our cars without first knowing what the ramifications will be. Tesla vehicles are not "disposable items"

Tesla did a poor job of designing the first MCU. It doesn't have interchangeable parts that can be swapped out. The MCU2 is better and faster, but still can't be upgraded. This fact has been covered many times.

So the point is, you spend big money on a Tesla, and then see the car degrade due to over the air updates. You think you getting an improved car or better software or more features, but really what is happening is you car is being down graded. Some cars have had range removed unknowingly as well.
SAME happened with VW to my Sportswagon Tdi. I understand this Tesla owner angst.

Programming on the ECU was “hot” and performed amazingly well. I enjoyed that torque under your toe acceleration but saddened the first service updated the system wiping all the “hot” off the ECU. What VW service handed back was a very proletarian domesticated wagon. All the Sport in Sportswagon VW neutured.

Who owns the vehicle? What’s included in the price paid? Who owns the software? Who owns the right to repair, delete and change either? Owners are faced with chipping the factory ECU to return the vehicle back to its original configuration at time of purchase. That’s $2000 on Tdi additional. VW will delete that epromm programming at the vehicle next service. Lost is the investment and around it goes…
