I just dug this up on the web regarding the Model 3:

“Musk says that the Model 3 prototypes that they are building now are ‘almost entirely built with production tooling’, which is why they are referring to the vehicles as ‘release candidates’ instead of beta prototypes.”

I had earlier thought that the first CTs built in Austin wouldn’t be labeled RCs because they will surely have manufacturing bugs, but if the comment above is true it depends more on how much production tooling
Is used and I suspect it was enough.

My earlier comment would probably refer to a Gold RC (though that is a term I have never seen used outside of SW development so I do not know).

Whether the one shown in this post is from Fremont, Hawthorne, Palo Alto, Austin, or somewhere else isn’t that important to me; that they are making them at Giga Austin is.
