I want to carry a full size spare, but not in the bed. What are your suggestions?

I like the swing away hitch mount. That would let me swing it out to be able to open the tailgate.
Me too.

Plus, you can leave the whole thing at home when you are driving around where you can easily get help to deal with a flat on the road. If you are preparing for a trip where you don't feel comfortable without a spare you can attach the carrier to your hitch and bolt on the spare. I'd need a hand to avoid back injury!

Anywhere on the outside of the vehicle, and you may take a 5% range hit 100% of the time for a spare you might need 0.01% of the time

Carry a plug kit and that 0.01% goes to 0.001%

If you’re going offroad, throw one in the bed


but mind that buying a same-size spare may be $1,500+

It’s a difficult choice. With the improved ability to maintain your tire pressure (based on need) with the on board systems CT will have standard(?), a blow out should be less common as tire pressure is generally from high or low tire pressure(+demands placed on tires).

As mentioned before, Cat-cap plug system (or w/e) should be sufficient to keep you going.

I have a ‘22 model Y. For some strange reason, it has had 3 slow leak punctures at various time since we have had it. They were all in the same tire! Because of the slow leaks I was able to have the first 2 fixed. The first one was patched on the inside. Fortunately it was on the outer edge of the tire - outside the liner. The next one was plugged. A couple of weeks ago the tire monitor indicated low pressure and I got it home before it got too low. I decided to DIY with the plug kit I carry. BUT I needed a jack and lug wrench to remove the tire to be plugged. At home, I was able to do the repair and it has held. I carry an electric pump. But, if I had to try to plug the tire on the road, I wouldn’t have had a jack or wrench, so might not have been able to do a repair. So, now I will carry a 3 ton (1.5 ton won’t do) jack, breaker bar, and 21 mm socket. I will do the same for the CT. If I decide to get a spare, I think the best option will be to carry it in the bed on long or rough trips. I’m hoping the airless tires I have seen mentioned will be an option. If so, I will get them.

"I've had numerous tire plug kits over the decades. Most had performed well enough, but most were just flat-out cheaply made.

After (yet again) finding my rubber cement for a cheaper kit had leaked and dried all over the inside of my last cheaply made tire plug kit, I went in search of a new kit which didn't need rubber cement, but I also wanted some high quality tools this time around.

I read the Safety Seal kit had self-vulcanizing rubber plugs, which meant I would not need rubber cement going forward. This was a huge plus, as that consumable never seemed to last when exposed to the summer heat in my trunk."

Perhaps the frunk??
M's series TVR's carried a full size spare under the bonnet, lying flat in FRONT of the radiator!! It aided greatly in the car's crash performance. To say it was a major pain in the ass (and back) to get in and out is an understatement.

So, in the above kit, how does the strips/strings self vulcanize?

I know rubber can be vulcanized with heat or chemically, but not sure how a strip in a case for a year or three is going to do something as well as when it was new.

And with a normal tire patch kit, the rubber cement causes the rubber strip to vulcanize...

So I am just curious how this product actually works without failing due to age, heatcycling in a vehicle, etc...

And if any rubber cement works, buying a new tube every year or two seems like a pretty cheap solution... if the tube has burst and gone bad.
