Still can’t believe it! With 2 reservations around 2,500 and 42,000, my son and I have been on the lookout for Cybertruck sightings here in Reno, NV over the last couple of months. We had one here at the new V4 Supercharger earlier in the week but never saw it. With multiple friends in Palo Alto seeing CT’s frequently, we figured we’d just have to wait until our order came up. We drove from Reno to Sacramento, Ca. 2-3 times a week and see the Tesla Semi’s on just about every trip. We’ve also see the Semi with a trailer that has an artistic CT paining on the side.
Anyway, as we’re driving home from Sac on Thursday evening, we stop at the Auburn, Ca. Supercharger (8:16pm) and as we pull in, my son starts screaming… he sees not 1 but 2 Cybertrucks charging! I immediately pull next to one of them and we both get out to start looking at what can only be described, as the most awesome, intense, magnificent, crazy, out of this world vehicle we’ve ever seen!
The CT next to us has 3-4 people in it that we believe are engineers based upon the equipment they had inside. They also weren’t as open to speaking with the 5 of us that were there gawking. The other CT had a woman and gentleman that were absolutely incredible. They politely asked us not to film the backseat but gave us the freedom to take photos and videos around the entire vehicle.
(Yes, I actually had a tape measure with me and it’s going to drive the forum bonkers but I chose to respect the fact that they apparently want to keep it for the unveil.). The two of them went out of their way to speak with us from inside the CT and told us they were doing “cold weather” testing and data collection in Truckee. (I’ve attached temps for several hours that’s evening and early morning.
I asked about the passenger visibility with the portion the BAW doesn’t seem to reach and the female passenger who looked to be about 5’7”, explicitly said it was a non issue. Attempting to look from outside the passenger side door and through the windshield, I can attest that it doesn’t appear it’s going to be an issue for anyone except the tallest of passengers.
They told us that the steering wheel is extremely comfortable and intuitive and that the employees that have driven it, all can’t believe it’s capabilities. He said the event unveiling is going to be unlike anything anyone can imagine and that they were just collecting last minute data due to the low overnight temperatures. They had driven up from Palo Alto.
*Note - Once they were done driving, the plan was to follow them over Highway 80, on our way to Reno, collecting an hour or so of video. When we arrived at the supercharger with the battery pre-conditioned, we had 54 miles. The CT we parked next to was in spot 1C and we were in 1B. After 17 minutes at the 250 supercharger, we were only at 67 miles and were only charging at I believe 38kw/h! I’ve never seen anything like that and we have 31k miles in just 27 weeks of ownership and over half of our charging is at superchargers. Not sure if the CT‘s charging were the cause of it, but another driver had the same issue. Once they left, we immediately jumped back to expected charging rates. Don’t know what it all means so just reporting for others to discuss.
The two CT’s left 5 minutes apart and we left 21 minutes after the 2nd one. Driving over the pass, we decided to try our luck and see if we could catch them charging in Truckee and wouldn’t you know it… we found the first one with the 2 amazing employees that were so gracious just an hour prior (9:48pm)! We chose not to bother them and parked 5 stalls away, just gawking over the beauty of the beast that was before us. We finished charging just as they did, so we grabbed a video on the way out. At the light, the male driver gave us a little wave that made my sons day!
*TESLA - Figure out who these two employees are and give them a raise! Their professionalism, courtesy and friendliness towards my son and I, was a breath of fresh air, given our world, current events and the way people seem to be treating one another these days. They went above and beyond and although they’ll never know the effect of their actions and the simple gesture of a wave goodbye to my son, I can tell you that it is something we’ll both never forget as a father and son moment.
As we headed east towards Reno, they headed west and my assumption is that they charged in order to drive back over the pass and may have done that a few times as the temperatures continued to drop throughout the night.
For those that haven’t seen it up close, all I can say is that there truly aren’t any words to describe it’s AWESOMENESS!!
PS. The tape measure app photo is purely a way to have some fun. I had no idea how to use it and was just fooling around. For those that will dive into it, enjoy! For those unhappy with my post, actions or lack there of… no worries as wish you all the best.
