Question for the truck experts: wasn't the payload capacity for this always going to be limited by its curb weight? A 7k curb weight and a 2,500 lb payload is 9,500 lbs GVWR. Exceed 10k gvwr and you push into medium duty / class 3 with a different tax status, insurance class, etc.. Irrespective of the "real" payload capacity, Tesla was always going to limit this to sub 10k. No?
generally speaking:

yes, once the 6,800/6,900lb curb weights were known (if you’re into that sort of thing), along the with H-rating, one could have backed-into the resulting bandwidth of payload being materially less than 3,500lb

of course, even then, some here would plug their ears and wait for Elon to whisper it into the nape of their neck

That may an outcome of having no marketing department. Marketing departments cost $$$; I'll put up with that sort of mistake to get more engineering for my $$$.

I bet these numbers are well within tolerance ranges. A truck that weighs ~7k Lbs will pull an 11k trailer very well. It won't be as white knuckle as someone driving a Rivian pulling the same trailer. I would bet this would pull anything under 15k just fine.
A Rivian weighs same/ more than the Cyber Truck. R1T curb weight = 6,914 - 7,148 lbs. CT reported under 6,900 lbs.

to be fair-fair, Tesla took refundable $100 fees as “indications of interest” alongside a document that, for anyone paying attention, screamed “THIS GUARANTEES YOU NOTHING AT NO PARTICULAR TIME BECAUSE WE JUST A MONTH AGO DREAMT UP THIS WHOLE THING”

The $100 was not a pre-order. It was a 200,000,000 loan to Tesla alongside a marketing ploy whereby Tesla could tell the street how ravenous people were for a Tesla BEV truck.

And I thank them for it, because I suspect it’s how I came to have my Lightning nearly 2 years ago now

And if you needed to leave room for a slightly larger battery pack (and extra 35 kwh = 500 lbs) you would bump down a bit.
