Did you watch the Munro video? The door inners and outers are complexly formed stainless steel stampings. The dies are made from aluma-bronze.

And yet, Franz just recently (Jay Leno demo drive) is still saying “You can’t stamp stainless steel“ and “can only bend it in one direction.”

Is Franz lying or is Lars lying?

Aluminum bronze alloy to stamp stainless steel.. man these guys are pushing hard on the materials science research.

An interesting snippet from this morning's video. Not sure when it was filmed, but they said they've stamped 1,000-1,200 of each part so far.. so that's how many CT's have been made in this process. Lars thinks they'll get 50k-100k from each stamping die before rework.

The "Competition" has to be sh*tting themselves in the C-suite, prepping their golden parachutes asap. Like the vermin abandoning the sinking ships, just watch, it will happen all at once and at large volumes.
Nah, they still have no clue what Tesla is doing, they still think it's the economy that is causing the downturn.

I will say this, that video was pretty cool. Hopefully they allow tours in the next 2 years, when I can hopefully take the plunge and buy one. Assuming they're 40% cheaper. Thanks for posting, as I unsubscribed from Munro awhile ago.

They said you can't stamp the HFS SS. Made thin enough you could stamp SS with balsa wood.
If you have footage of them qualifying that way, you can post evidence here. I've repeatedly heard them say... (at ~4:00 in Leno video)

May not be the same stainless alloy... Most likely not be the same thickness on the inner... or it may not be hardened using the same process... Just spitballing here but that would be my guess...

well, not counting beta prototypes that were entirely "hand built", they have registered a total of 450 VINS across Release Candidates, Manufacturing Confirmation, and now ~Pre-production 'Founders' units

of those, about 220 VINS are registered for Founders units.

Registered VINS always outnumber actual vehicles under assembly (they register before they begin assembly).

So theve built somewhere south of ~450 total trucks to date, and somewhere south of ~220 Foundation units to date (about 30 of which have been delivered in connection with the delivery event).

So, somewhere south of 190 units are already or coming into the world as we speak, for initial deliveries.

remember all those Joe T videos of eg castings by the hundreds laying around outside GFTX? Most or all of those have been rejects. I'm sure they have a similar learning curve through these other stampings, etc.

The general statement that you "can only bend stainless steel in one direction" is obviously wrong, we all have seen SS pots before. Maybe it's "hard" to bend HFS that way but SS shouldn't be a problem so long it's thin enough.

Also there's thermal expansion to consider between two dissimilar metals, let alone galvanic corrosion like previously mentioned.

Now that we've seen what they can do I'm wondering if M2 can now have rounded SS bodywork for good aero at low cost and no paint.

It blows my mind that Tesla got the innovative truck to market in only 48 short months. The designing, engineering, building construction, ordering and installing expensive machinery, tooling, etc. was done in record time.

Go to any store where stainless steel appliances are sold, and you'll see that stainless steel can indeed be stamped. There are many flavors of stainless steel.
HFS can't be stamped because of the hardness of that particular version of the material.

I was blown away by the SS manufacturing process.

Tesla had to reinvent the wheel with so many new manufacturing techniques. Air bending, proprietary SS formula, roll straightening, manufacturing SS panels without marring the exterior finish, etc.

Tesla has the techniques down, now it’s simply of manner of scaling for volume production.

I learned two things that I was curious about:
-SS panels are 1.8mm and 1.4mm in thickness
-the inner door structure is also manufactured from SS

Really looks GREAT without those pesky door mirrors!

My favorite Monroe CT video to date. I nerded out listening to the engineers and seeing those massive machines in action.

I was surprised to learn that the inner door shell and frunk panel support structure are made from stamped stainless steel.

I would still like to know how they manufacture the front valance. It has a top lip under the LED running light that is bent at 90 degrees but it doesn’t show any signs of welding.
