How long before stealing stuff out of the frunk becomes the hot new TikTok challenge?
Re: 12v-48v
FYI, this was talked about in some YT "interviews" with Tesla folks ... I'm thinking the Leno one.

Re: frunk
There was a whole lot of hoopla when this was in the Tesla Model X manual. I don't recall ever hearing of an incident. Was sure handy when my TMX 12v died in the middle of a OTA install and I needed to use a jumper battery to finish the install.

B&C are tailgate no?
May have been with the tailgate open which is the post I indirectly post via Crissa.
Excluding hinged opening area
72.92 + 19.89 = ~92.81
~7 feet 8.81 inches.

I expected to see the payload drop from the dual-motor (2,500 lbs) to the tri-motor (2,270 lbs), based on the higher curb weight of the latter. Did not anticipate that the payload would drop even further (down to 2,200 lbs and 2,000 lbs) with the all-season tires. The all-terrain tires are LT-rated, the all-season tires are not.

Anything 2,000 lbs and up is still good by half-ton truck standards (though not jaw-dropping, like the 3,500 lb number announced in 2019). However, if a range extender is installed, the effective payload that remains will most likely be nothing to get excited about.

Sigh: "The bed cargo outlets are disabled while in Drive". The whole point of those 120v cargo outlets for me is to run some powered coolers in the back to keep fridge/freezer/medicine stuff at the right temperature for a month or two on a road trip. Oh, except that power to the 120v outlets is also disabled while charging. So much for road tripping with a powered cooler, it will be off while driving or charging. So now I have to get a large battery pack for the back which is charged by the truck when parked and runs the coolers while driving? Maybe an Anker F3800? I'm sure the engineers had a reason to do this, and I'm glad they are thinking, I just wish they had solved the problem instead.

Can't be a toad any faster than walking speed, but this is expected I guess as Tesla never said anything different. Rivian promised toad but failed on this one.

Interesting that the crossbar weight limits allow more on 3 crossbars than 2, given that the instruction manuals for the crossbars themselves specifically say that you can't use more than 2 crossbars at a time (or at least the instruction manual did at launch).

Given the dimensions and photos the range extender might only be about 18" high which would actually leave some space above it, maybe you could still fit skis diagonally in there if you are careful.

You lose 300lb of payload with the all season tires.

The bed storage above load floor is 56.2cuft, maybe 40cuft after range extender. The 5 seater Y is about 30cuft in the trunk, and the 5 seater X about 40 behind the 5 seats.

It does look like you can control a bunch of things fairly quickly from the steering wheel at least.

Would I actually want to use auto-lower? I suspect the car is easier to enter/exit when it is higher up, and if it lowers it may get stranded on parking barriers?

autopilot following distance goes down to 2. max autopilot speed is 85.

It has a blind spot flashing red light.

Your dashcam usb stick is supposed to go in the usb outlet in the glove box. Reasonable, but I was also hoping to keep a fully charged flashlight in there.

It does have wiper defroster.

I'm only halfway through the video, but I need a break...

That is unfortunate for a few reasons like construction workers wanting to have their tool batteries being charged while on the go to/from/between sites.

I have a 6 seat TMX and have a fridge between the captains chairs in the 2nd row. We use this on long road trips and have it on 24x7. It does 120v or 12v.

As for the CT, certainly, the inside cabin 120v plugs are energized at least while driving but I see not while while charging. The cabin and bed 120v plugs are independent as we read on OP.
I'd likely put my fridge inside anyway for easy access. It is fantastic while roadtriping for snacks, drinks, and lunches.

Hm, really interesting, thanks for the link...

The Rivian tow operator's guide says not to tow it behind another vehicle:
https://rivian.com/support/article/r1-tow-operator-guide
Also see https://www.thervgeeks.com/can-electric-vehicles-be-flat-towed/

It might be that Sandy sees that component as solving the usual blocker for toading an EV, but the Rivian engineers are concerned about some other component. For some vehicles the limiting factor isn't the drivetrain so much as the lubrication, the braking, or the 12v battery.

Rivian certainly originally claimed it could be flat towed, then walked that back, customers complained... so maybe they will do toad some day, but I think I'd want something more official than Sandy before I trusted enough to toad it.

When you say Sandy ... RJ was the other person in the interview ... and it seems he concurred. One axle tho it seemed so a tow dolly.

It only works when there is no power I believe
a) I wouldn't know what that means because it would need to be 'low' power I think. I want to say my 12v was 9v when the OTA stopped but I couldn't get into the trunk.

b) not sure that makes sense because what if you locked your bag (with keycard/fob/phone) in the frunk ... accidently. Then you may still want to get it even with a full LV battery.

This can't be true, right? Usually, you'd just visit a webpage and it'll redirect you to the portal.

Then your phone is still close enough to the car to unlock it.

Maybe it just has to be below a certain threshold? Idk, the only time I used it my 12v was dead dead
