Cybertruck Towing Common Sense FAQ

In a very black & white world, this chart works.

There’s a lot of dogging on those who want to tow a trailer with an EV truck (or car). For full timers, that seems like a difficult challenge. For casual campers, it’s just a modification of what the travel leg to your campsite looks like.

Keep in mind, just 5-6 years ago during the Model 3 ramp, many people would use the same chart but put “Do you need to drive more than 200 miles?” in the bubble. If I drove 800-1000 miles per week, I wouldn’t drive an EV. I make a 800-1000 road trip 2-3 times a year and an EV is just fine. Same analysis with towing.

Well, I drive about 1000 miles a week for work, and have since I got my first MS 60, in 2014. Since then, the drive hasn’t changed but my fleet has grown. I have purchased every model they make (sometimes 2). with the exception of the Roadster. Can’t wait for my Cybertrucks! I did get the email to configure two weeks ago (day 1 reservation), and went full freight CB FS. No word on when it will arrive. I am in NJ.

I clarified that I was referring to 800-1000 miles at a time every week, not 800-1000 over the course of a week. Over the course of a week, agreed that it’s still a no-brainer at least for me.

Your own map shows where you should stop and charge. Just like in a prior century where you'd fill up when leaving the highway, grab cold sodas at that last mom and pop's.

I've heard of this one, even. It's mentioned a few times in the motoblogging I've read. You're over most of the climb, so you'd even have space in your pack to charge.

There's a use case for a 500 mile truck, but yours isn't it.

Logic would ask if the CT can tow the average distance between SucperChargers.. Not how far the person wants or needs to tow..

Not sure I follow this question, are you saying I either need to believe the Cybertruck can do feats that are impossible, or I need to leave the forum?

You seem to still be here, after saying that the truck won't work for you numerous times. A number of folks have taken a lot of time to try to help you through what you believe to be impossible. Experienced Tesla owners don't believe that it is as impossible as you think that it might be.
I know that I've personally spent a lot of time looking up your situation, determine what the option were available to you.
I looked at your map before you added the yellow dot and after you added it. You seem to keep wanting people to help you out, but you shoot down every response with what seems like very little understanding of what the response is.

It comes down to this, do you want a Cybertruck or not? There are a LOT of people on this forum that want to help people that want help. It's mighty infuriating trying to help people that aren't going to listen.

If you don't want t Cybertruck, try to have a little respect for others and stop making them respond to your queries.

Please just let people discuss Cybertruck stuff in reality here and stick to X threads with $TSLA pumpers if that's what you want.

Alright, but we're trying to point out things you're missing.

With an ICE vehicle, what do you do before you leave the highway? Fill up. Make sure your air is right, you've got water and supplies.

It's no different in an EV.

In fact, an EV saying is 'ABC': Always Be Charging.

Unlike the old fill-up, where you had to seek out a station and then stand there to put the gas in, stand there to pay... With an EV you scope out a plug, plug in, and walk away.

It's all the comfort of full-service; you just match that charging up with stops you were gonna make anyhow to stretch your legs, go pee, eat, buy tchotchkes, etc.

In all seriousness, 67 to 78, just before Julian, top off at the SC and go to ocotillo wells, on the way back, stop just after Julian if you need, or hit one of the 2 in El Cajon, (I’ve used the one in the Costco Parking lot there) or go all the way home if you can. Looks like that works with any triple digit range, or even less.

Every other house has a decked out 4runner, Tacoma, or trailer. From semi-costal San Diego to Ocotillo Wells (image)/ Anza Borrego area it's 100 miles. Specifically from my door to the entry gate it's exactly 99 miles without stops. It's a gradual up then a drop down to the valley.

People are towing out off-roading toys, trailers, dirt bikes, etc then camping for 1-2 nights then heading back. Once you unload the trailer at camp (usually boondocking), you drive around to a nice area to hike or just offroad for fun, exploring the area and whatnot.

UPDATE: doh! ... heck I did the below without the trailer.

Looks like it takes about 25% of your SOC to go one way. Here is a possible route.
I did a round trip and don't know why ABRP took a different way there ore on the way back. I did tell it to leave on Fri 6pm and then go home on a Sun 12pm. Maybe traffic? Not sure.

Another example is to stop at one of the SCs on the way there or back. Santa Ysabel, CA [Tesla] is a touch out of the way but at least it would be a different scene/route.

UPDATE: Added some Wh/mi stats as a reference point when towing some things.

Please help me understand. I put in the address of the SC at Santa Ysabel to the Ocotillo Wells RV park, AND back. If you leave the SC at 90%, without a trailer in a CT AWD, it will take you about 30% charge to do the round trip. If you assume a 50% loss with towing, then you would use 60% of the total charge. If you charged to 100% and lost another 15% loss each way, you still hit the SC at 10% SOC. And with an adapter, there appear to be some L2 chargers in OW. Makes it even easier if you can get use of them. Add to that, if you were to stop at the RV park (even for a little while), rented a spot and used a 220v campsite hookup, it ain't even close. And even better, they offer trailer storage, so if you are doing multiple trips, you don't have to tow very far.

How is that impossible?

I played around with ABRP changing the 65 mph ref Wh/mi to 858 for light trailer pulling.
I also used the option to see the elevation gain. It only showed a 5 minute charge each way but based on the energy usage playing at Ocotillo Wells probably 15-20 min on the way there and X min on the way back. Good exercises in ABRP to see what peoples use cases area.
