We’ve only been in bed. We used 4’ long rigid snake camera to, very difficult mind you, angle it down all the way over the angular hump, to get that picture. We can’t use adhesive because it will stick against wall before we reach iPad. It’s insanely difficult to meander through the obstacles.

Thanks all for the ideas.
3M double-sided tape attached on the camera stalk/wire. Send it down with a piece of strong string attached to the pull-off adhesive backing on the other side. Get it in place, pull the string to peel off the backing, and go to town.

I'm 50/50 on whether this works, or makes things worse.

rooting for you!

Addd fiber optical camera, will travel! ?
We have the camera and bought a couple of these grabbers from Amazon. Yeah this sucks big time. I’ll update you all tomorrow with our most likely failed attempt.

Have faith, my man. Doubting is what stops us from most successes. ?Rooting for you!

There is a DIY fix for adjusting the height of the cover before it hides as it roll down. Why not take the lead cover off so you have better access. Refer to the post “ Is your tonneau cover not going down”

This is one edge case that Tesla didn’t consider but opens up an entire avenue for debugging that will probably end up in a service manual. Maybe Tesla will fix it for free for the experience …
It actually is in the service manual. Well, not "removing an iPad from tonneau storage bin," but removal of tonneau and accessing the bin is.

my biggest fear.. I almost dropped my iphone in that slit but the cover was open when I was filming the removal of the screws for the basecamp lol.

I still don't get how a kid drops the ipad with it closed unless he was inside vibin in the truck bed with the cover closed and.. oh ok I can see it now..

Yeah like a kids fort when playing. He and his friend were hanging out and wanting to watch Netflix in his hideaway. Yes he realizes Netflix is also in the back seat too. Oh well.

From your first post I think a lot of us pictured him on top of the cover somehow dropping the iPad into the very small gap at the front of the cover, behind the roof glass. This makes much more sense.

Yes, I see what you mean. should have read "with the cover closed and inside of the bed". It almost looks like a ledge where you can rest something.

Which leads me to this question for Tesla really. Let say you load it up with soil/dirt, close the cover so it doesn't get muddy. Go over a lot of bumps, and rough terrain. Wouldn't the dirt just fall into that cavernous area? seems like a poor design. Or really anything that can fly around can drop down in there that is narrow enough or like soil, like crushed stone or modified stone. etc.

Is there anything of value on the iPad? I had a lcd screen replaced last week as I damaged it, but didn’t actually crack the outer digitizer. Needed my photos more than the iPad. $153.00 was worth it.
Will rolling the cover back kick the iPad into never never land and not damage the cover? Then just write off the iPad.

If it jacks up the gears or anything then I’m screwed and will cost who knows how much. If we cannot fish out today then I have that 9am appt with Tesla SC tomorrow.
