Good info, with about 30% mixed in CT/Tesla hate haha.

CT has very cool, thick steel doors and as a measure of strength they show it can stop some bullets.
Electrek: "Despite the fact that Tesla has claimed that the Cybertruck is “bulletproof”

Fred at Electrek is not a fan of Tesla.
True, I follow him on X and agree with almost everything he says, even if I'd prefer him to be a little nicer. Similar to Elon. Him calling out Elon on X for going on it too much has actually caused him to go on X too much too imo, stare not into the abyss...

Tesla needs to improve. This is just embarrassing for Tesla. This will create tons of materials for haters. Tesla had so many years to torture test it…yet failed at the most basic thing.

All the testing in the world is useless if the proper process isn't followed at (or documented for) manufacturing.

Remember the NASA space shuttle, and the heatshield of ceramic tiles? Each must be glued and held in place while curing, a laborious process.

The well-meaning but negligent workers figured out that it would cure faster if the adhesive was first moistened before attaching the tile, and the engineers flipped out upon discovery. There was no data on how this alteration to procedure would affect the bonding strength. They not only had to stop the practice, but then had to remove all the tiles and start over.

Since this cantrail failure is a recent development, I'm assuming that some manufacturing change was made to "save time" but whoops, that procedure was there for a reason.

We had an extensive discussion about this here just a few weeks ago, with references to adhesive datasheets and speculation on whether this will result in a recall. Good times.

They should just give people a few bottles of super glue (we can call it CT repair kit ?) and have them on their merry way. Mine is super early VIN (low 2700s) and no issues, perhaps they had the knowledge of how it's supposed to be made but as @CyberGus said, might have stumbled upon a whoopsie moment trying to cut cost.

mine seems fine and its been parked outside in florida for a year. Could be something they changed in manufacturing.
People also noticed it happened in the very cold climates more. If it was water mixed into the adhesive, perhaps the freeze/thaw cycles of excess water trapped within the adhesive could cause this.

The main stream media and Tesla haters will have a field day with the recall news.

The recall population includes all Model Year (“MY”) 2024 and 2025 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023, to February 27, 2025.
The company confirmed that it added up 46,096 Cybertrucks, which represent all Cybertrucks in the US.

Tesla describes the exact issue with the cantrail trim falling off the vehicle:

The Cybertruck is equipped with a cosmetic applique along the exterior of the vehicle, known as the cant rail, which is an assembly comprised of an electrocoated steel stamping joined to a stainless steel panel with structural adhesive. The cant rail assembly is affixed to the vehicle with fasteners. On affected vehicles, the cant rail stainless steel panel may delaminate at the adhesive joint, which may cause the panel to separate from the vehicle.
The remedy involves replacing the cant rail assembly with “one that meets durability testing requirements.”

The difference with the old trim is that the new one will have a better adhesive assembly and “a stud welded to the stainless panel with a nut clamping the steel panel to the vehicle structure.”

In the recall notice, Tesla said it hadn’t implemented the remedy to vehicles in production yet, but it plans to “on or around March 21, 2025.”
