Tesla to Recall Over 46,000 Cybertrucks Over Exterior Panel Issue

March 20, 2025

Tesla said on Thursday it is recalling 46,096 Cybertruck vehicles in the U.S. over an exterior panel that can detach while driving, after more than six call-backs for the pickups last year.

Tesla is recalling the vehicles over issues of the cant rail — a stainless-steel exterior trim panel — delaminating and detaching from the vehicle, it said.

As a remedy, Tesla service will replace the rail assembly free of charge.

Same. Mine is secure. Not replacing it until it seems loose. When light bar comes in and bed battery pack, then they can do it all at once. Sucks will have to have that piece rewrapped, but at least the wrap place can do something like that in less than an hour.

Pretty sure the next service appointment you have, Tesla will be compelled to perform the recall. So unless you never need service again in the future, this would be acceptable.

What I find most interesting about the official recall notice is that Tesla only identified 151 failures out of the 46,000 trucks they produced.
That says to me that the recall is completely voluntary, except for the fact that a failure could produce an unsafe highway condition.
It's a mandatory recall (ordered by a regulatory agency). A voluntary recall means the manufacturer is recalling but was not required to. The distinction has nothing to do with the consumer's action or lack thereof. Nobody is going to make you get the recall service done if you don't want to, but I guess you would be liable then for any consequences arising from neglecting to do it.

That's not a large number for 16 months of production.
They can definitely produce that many if they want, but I am hoping they can SELL that many :( so they do not slow production.

I do wonder:
1) How many occurrences of this have there been?
2) Is it climate related? (i.e. all these issues have occurred in southern states when the truck is left out in the direct sun all day)

Silver lining maybe, I think with a recall they have to disclose the total number of vehicles, this might give us a pretty accurate number on how many CTs have been delivered. Estimates of 30-50k would make 46,000 pretty close.

Yea for ships way more trucks (for now) so their total production year recall #s would be higher any given year.
