I reserved because:

1. I’m a technophile and this thing was presented as a technological tour de force.

2. I love being outdoors and with the promised 500 mile range and folding midgate (which would’ve given access to the vault and made it easy to sleep in there with a sleeping bag in full climate control) the cybertruck was touted to be my perfect overlanding companion. It was also supposed to have a built-in ramp allowing me to easily load up my cyberquad, which I was definitely going to purchase. The future was going to be incredible!

3. It was going to be fast, it was going to be unmatched off-road and the stainless steel exoskeleton was going to be bulletproof and maintenance free.

I went through with the purchase because:

Fuck if I know! Beyond being a technological tour de force undoubtably and also super quick; not one of the things that I was mostly looking forward to came to pass. NOT ONE!

❌No Midgate
❌No ramp
❌No cyberquad for adults
❌SS is temperamental
❌200[!] miles less range than promised

The miss on range was a dealbreaker and I should’ve stuck to my guns on that because it cannot replace my FJ, and that was my entire intent.

The truck is amazing, handling is sublime, all of those things are great but at the end of the day I have a use mission critical use-case scenario that I can’t use it for.

I currently have 5 vehicles when I’m done I will have 7 (Aptera & Scout incoming). But that number should really only be 6. I will not purchase the Scout if it doesn’t deliver 100% on the promise of 500 miles of range.

I’m keeping my FS/CB forever, but I’ve learned my lesson. No compromise! I know what I need; you tell me you’re gonna give me that and don’t, I’m out!

As I say all the time with my Cybertruck I got exactly what I bargained for it’s not like I was tricked I knew what I was buying when I bought it. I just deluded myself in a way that I usually don’t. I think probably for the first time ever I got caught up in the hype.

Contrastingly, my C8, my FJ, my model S plaid and our X do everything that we expect them to do and I couldn’t be happier. Zero complaints with any of them.

I think my CB is great, but it is absolutely disappointing when compared to what was promised, and what I can actually do with it. It being a lightning rod for other people‘s hatred is also not ideal.

Happiness is about managing expectations. The delta between what I really wanted and what I got with the CB is pretty significant. But yeah, it’s incredible to drive!!!

Being retired and a skier, I have long wanted an electric version of a Sprinter RV, so I could go on skiing roadtrips without having to think about 3+ kinds of fuel onboard, gas, diesel, propane, electricity.

Unfortunately, AWD Sprinter RVs got to be over $200k, and thinking about an electric version, I figured would add another $50k! Here's a used one:

My ski bud has one of those. I really don't want to spend that much for a tall diesel. So, I started looking at trucks with popups, but of course, I wanted it to be electric.

Then when Elon announced the CyberTruck, I was excited by the possibilities because the pricing was incredibly reasonable for the dual-motor. Of course, inflation and production reality means it costs quite a bit more, but not outrageously more, so I got my CT a few days ago.

For me, I feel the same way as I did when I reserved it. It'll be my AWD electric adventure vehicle to go skiing around the country. Of course now, it can also drive for me! Even better. And, it has AWS, so I can back into tight spots! Yay!

And, here I am parked at the ski resort, yesterday. I'm at the free destination charger. It's not even the free charging I like, but the fact that I'm literally the closest vehicle to the primary ski lift that is so cool. Everyone else has to park way down below.

The All-wheel steering is a godsend, because look at that parking spot. I have to back into a narrow lane where cars are parked somewhat randomly. It's not level, as there's a slope to the left, and there's a drainage gully to my left. Not to mention a steel pole that I don't want to hit. Yes, the destination chargers are behind those temporary sheds. The US under-16 ski nationals are this week, so some ski waxing sheds have been temporarily placed where you would normally park for charging!

So, nothing has changed for me. I've got an electric adventure vehicle, but it can steer tighter, drive for me, and the range is great. I was never going to get the 500mi version, nor the range extender. It was always going to be the dual-motor.

As far as range is concerned, I've gotten used to my 2018 Model 3's range. 300mi works for me. When roadtripping, I have to stop every couple hrs for a break. That allows me to charge from about 10% to about 60%, in under 15mins. Perfect. I've found the CT to be quite similar, except since its battery is 50% larger, the charging time is also 50% more. That still suits me fine. I'll just walk a little slower when coming back from the bathroom.

Edit: the more I drive it, to ski resorts and back, the more I like that the range is almost exactly the same as my Model 3. I don't have to change any of my mental calculations. When I see 60% SOC, I know exactly how much range I have because it is so close to my Model 3's range.

I thought today's trip to the ski resort and back was pretty cool, I averaged 250Wh/mi on the way home. That's kind of my norm for my Model 3. Sure, I went down in elevation about 1600', but still. Not sure why the map seems to have forgotten the elevation data. But hey, I averaged 250Wh/mi! My avg speed was slow, ~45mph, but I was mostly driving 50-60mph on back roads.

So, no regrets from reservation to now. The only annoyance is peak-craziness with the Elon-haters, which obviously wasn't something we thought about when we reserved the truck.

Yeah, of course I'm disappointed now. But it's still an awesome truck.
  • It was always going to have an aluminum substructure.
  • They are making them in numbers
  • It is the most efficient full sized truck
  • The most range for its cargo capacity among the EV trucks
  • The smallest footprint of the full-sized trucks
  • Tightest turning radius
  • Best looks
It's those last five items I really wanted!
but... Tesla hasn't gotten to the model I could afford.
  1. Mass production has been limited and the price is 2x higher than inflation.
  2. CEO decided to go all in on not showing up to work.
  3. No origami folds to attach the skin, although it is laminated into the structure.
  4. No ramp.
The version I reserved still hasn't come out, and I gotta say, spouse isn't in the mood to talk new truck anymore.

Some of the claims like the CT cannot be keyed or scratched are obviously false. The price and range were huge letdowns at first, but overall I love the truck.
No one said it couldn't be keyed or scratched, but it's not as easy as with a painted truck and the scratch can just be polished out without having to repaint and re-clearcoat the entire side of the truck.

I've scratched all my trucks by off-roading through over-grown vegetation and mud but the only one I could easily polish back to new was my most recent truck, the Cybertruck. The metal is much harder and thicker than paint and clearcoat so the scratches are very shallow and easy to polish out.

Did you see the video of the girl-boy using a key to try to scratch a swastika in the side of a Cybertruck? She first tried normally, then looked at it from a couple of angles, puzzled that it was barely visible. She ended up using both hands to grip the key really hard so she could apply maximum pressure and re-traced the swastika multiple times. Then looked at it again from a couple of different angles and gave up, walking away looking dejected.

Sure, it left a visible swastika, but it polished right out. That would have been thousands in damage on a painted truck.

My expectations for the Cybertruck were very high, so high that people called me a fan boy. But the actual truck just blew away my own high expectations, it hauls heavy loads and drives on rugged roads like nothing else!

Best of all, it's just as comfortable when completely empty. Every other truck I've had a terrible ride when unloaded.

I wanted a pass through from front to bed. They didn't say it was going to be a thing, but I was hoping. I also wanted the tailgate ramp. We didn't get that, but I used my $2500 gift certificate to buy the ramps.

As far as my reason why I was going to purchase the truck in 2018, that never changed and is still the reason I bought it. I wanted a new truck paid for so I could retire. It's why my CT is in the garage and I'm paying it off. Once I'm done, I'm retiring. My CT will have low miles and get me through the rest of my life. I was always going to buy FSD for $7k reservation price.

Elon said twice that I can find that the HFS, originally said the 30x cold rolled steel was harder than a car key and therefore couldn't be scratched by it.

There were numerous people on this board that repeated the same thing.

Correct. Yet we got a guy on here having to remove a KEYED swastika from his truck and I’m getting pinstriping from freaking bushes. ?

also, in the most recent video the assailant is trying to convince the guy that his truck isn’t damaged because he just used a key and he’s screaming at him that it is. Can’t have it both ways boys!

“I wanted a truck that looked like the future”- Elon Musk.

I loved it because it looked like the future. Was a bit overwhelming but just ordered.

I love my AWD CT because of the advancements to the industry:

  1. 5 ⭐ crash ratings- highest of any truck..ever
  2. Crazy advanced aluminum GIGA castings for efficiency, safety and bad-assiness.
I think you spelled bad-assiness wrong. It's bad-addedne... bad-assinest... bad.... No, you got it right. ?

Good point. I forgot how bad the ride could be empty. It wasn't until I was loaded down in my F-350 that I said "Man, it rides nice when loaded down". I haven't thought of that for years. The same went for my last F-150 though it always rode pretty good. My Maverick. Well, it was never really loaded down and it always rode well.

I have wanted a True Electric Car/Truck since the 70's (I know shows how old I am). I used to talk to my Father many times about why we dont have electric Vehicles. Since we were both engineers , him being a Fuel Controls for Jet Aircraft and me being Computer/Process Controls Electronic Design. He didn't think it could ever be done to make an Electric Battery power enough to do it. I also told him he was being short sighted.

Move Forward to 2019, I really wanted a Electric Truck by then and not a car unless some made a Jeep Wrangler electric one. (Not the joke Stelantis calls their electric Jeep). Elon Flashes this Retro Scifi Truck onto the stage with a Electric ATV, How Cool is this, and you can reserve one for $100! $49K for 4wd Drive....I am in!

Move Forward 2024, Now we jump from 49K to 79K OUCH, and no Cash Rebate, double sucks, I almost let it go without getting it. But then I remember the 70's and how passionate I was about get a electric Truck and it here! Yes I was saving since 2018 to buy either a new Jeep Wrangler or Get the CT and if it was 49K no brainer, now after 6 years I am still short 20K from buying it outright. but I decided to go for it.

The truck is amazing to Drive, I love it 1/2 the cost of my Ram 1500 Diesel to drive not even figuring all the maintenance. I charge it once a week and drive to work and back and if extra I charge twice in that week so what. Have not traveled far yet but looking forward to it. My wife hates the look but loves the ride, it so quiet I can actually talk to her while driving lol. I hope Things settle down on these stupid protesters, I actually am more concerned about damage in my investment right now. Especially the ax job the media keeps posting and lies is really upsetting me because have Jeeps for over 30 years and love to talk about them to people that are interested, I feel the same about this Truck and all the thing it can do well, I love to teach the true about these and banish the misconceptions. Which is why I am so distressed about our world today and the lost soles to Facebook and social media who are lead around by the nose and follow blindly without really thinking for them selves, sound familiar WW2 fans? Yes My father fought in that war and I learn a lot about WW2 to be able to talk to him and many members of my family who was there, at least the ones that came back. So twisted truth of today is very irritating.

And either Wes or Lars said so in a video interview, maybe with Sandy Munro. I think people have try/work pretty hard to scratch it. I doubt anyone was expecting Cybertruck hate back then.
