PCS failure rates by year...is it just a matter of time?

I’m gonna keep my truck now that they are swapping my PCS next week. Also I found out for FSD transfer I would have to take delivery by March 31st which wouldn’t happen. And foundation series cybertrucks are excluded. But I’m good now so moot point. I appreciate all the discussion here as it helped me a lot.

Did your happen to fail after making this post or did you ask them to proactively swap and they did?

When I made this post I didn’t have a service appointment. My truck was charging at half speed but I was just dealing with it. After hearing that could be a warning sign of the PCS I made an appointment and sure enough they are gonna swap it.

I've got no symptoms but mine is being replaced right now proactively. And I got a brand new model s plaid as a loaner to boot . I'm telling you, the secret is to always take donuts.

there seems to be crossing threads on the PCS topic - x-sharing my experience here too:
Mine (07/2024 FS AWD, 23K miles) just went puff as well - while we were on a road trip to our snowboarding holiday in colorado. After supercharging all the way to the hotel (1000+ miles), during the night charging at the hotel (great service though!!!) got a note that chargin stopped unexpectedly and would neither take a charge from the level 2 nor tesla supercharger - went straight to denver-superior tesla service center, they took the CT in, gave me a loaner - we continued to the slopes, carving all day and picking it up again in the afternoon at no charge. what an amazing service from Tesla.

Besides the donuts what was the cost and process for doing it?
Doing a cross country road trip of about 6k miles for my business this summer and PCS going out along the route would likely bankrupt the venture.

Yea when I asked they told me there was a service bulletin too but my truck wasn't included. They didn't say f it was VIN based or not but mine definitely sits in the VIN range of many that have had it fail.

For a consumer, buying a new CT to avoid a potential PCS failure doesn't seem like a financially sound idea. The depreciation for 1 CT, let alone 2 is going to be more than the PCS replacement and there's no guarantee that a revised unit has a materially different failure rate than earlier units. It makes far more sense to be vigilant for signs of a PCS failure and keep pressure on Tesla to investigate the issue further. The sample size on these forums is way too small to determine a real failure rate.

PCS part revision has been bumped and tye better warranty coverage is a plus. Yeah, there are many things about Cybertruck that make later versions better than older, but not better enough to overcome the cost of switching. Sales tax alone would cover most of a PCS replacement.

You're proposing absorbing a second new-car-depreciation hit, for essentially the same vehicle, in order to get a fresh warranty.

I'd suggest keeping your present CT and even if you ended up having to pay out-of-pocket for some future PCS failure, the cost to do so would be far less than the second depreciation hit. You're essentially self-insuring against that future failure.

It might be different if we had data that showed Tesla has fully solved the PCS failures. Alas, those failures have been happening for many years, across Tesla's lineup, and I don't think we've seen anything to suggest that newer vehicles and/or the latest part numbers have addressed it.

You'd be throwing a lot of money at a hope and a prayer.

I would add, just having my PSC fail and replaced, that the warranty on the new PSC is 3 years from replacement. As when batteries are replaced - the battery warranty is in parallel to the overall vehicle warranty period.
