Agreed. If im being 100% honest, being this is my first EV, I am a little apprehensive about parking the CT in the garage in the first place. Add the whole charging into the equation and im all about safety and doing it the right way. I don't want that m-f-r burning my house down lol

I don't have a work commute and average 10k mi a year so I don't really need high speed charging but its the safety margin that appeals to me.

Besides, I don’t have a dryer plug in my garage as our laundry room is separate and according to tesla, even the good 14-50s need changing every 3-4 years.

Just to make it clear, in US households, 14-30 (not 14-50) is used for dryers, thus known as dryer outlet.

Although, by "both adapters", we were talking about the 2 NEMA adapters that are included with the Mobile Connector. You got an additional level 3 DC charging adapter (CCS1 to NACS), which I mentioned in my other post that Tesla includes in some areas for all Tesla models.

Where did you take delivery if you don't mind sharing?

Hi @AWDMK4 what's the gauge of your wire? I have an existing 8 AWG copper wire running from electrical box to garage. just wonder if I need 6 AWG for cybertruck charging. I paid $153 for 125' 8 AWG wire in 2018, LOL.

I did “NOT” get the CCS adapter either. I have purchased 2 model 3’s, 2 Model Y and now the CT. Never once did I get the CCS adapter. I had to purchase it separately. I think I paid $250 when Tesla first came out with them.

Here is what I got with the CT.

@Alpine if you are going the NEMA 14-50 route, all you need is the 14-50 outlet. (It’s sitting in my garage and you can have it.

But like @AWDMK4 suggested, if it were me, I would get the UWC. If you ever decide to get a second Tesla, you may need the speed.

I managed perfectly fine with the 14-50 all these years with just the Y. Once I got the CT, we always had to plan around who gets to charge when.

8 gauge unfortunately won't do. You can do 6 gauge if it's THHN.

@Alpine, for some reason I had you pegged as a long time Tesla owner.


There should only be 2 options for home charging your Tesla or any EV:

(1) Tesla Universal Wall Connector - Powershare future proofing (+$65 well spent)
(2) Tesla Wall Connector - if you never have a need for Powershare and have to save $65

Will a mobile connector on a NEMA 14-50 work? Sure but if nothing is there already, go the Wall Connector route, you'll thank me later.


In Oct 2023 when we bought our first Tesla, Model 3 RWD, it came with no mobile connector and after running the numbers of installing a 14-50 vs a Wall Connector, the latter was an easy decision based on overall cost, ease of electrical wiring and code compliance. My only regret was that the Universal Connector wasn't available at the time ($100 difference in 2024) and I was limited in the location I could easily place the charger in the garage. With my install, I have to back in the Model 3 parked on the left side of the garage to reach the Wall Connector, right side Model 3 can be parked straight in.

Here are my parts cost to install the Wall Connector, no labor included since I did it myself. My breaker panel was not in the garage, hence the 30' of wiring. All parts costs have increased since 2023, though breakers have come back down in my case.

I have done all my home charging through either the mobile connector or the Evdance 40A unit I mentioned earlier since I got my Model Y in 2023. These are both generally plugged into 14-50 outlets. Particularly if you are able to do your own electrical work, it is a very economical approach. Sometimes I plug the mobile charger into a 5-15 outlet when it is more convenient or I just need to maintain charge. This has worked well for me. For the last couple of years, that electricity has primarily come from my DIY Solar gear.

CCS adapter is included in very few select areas,. mostly in CA.

Most CTs come with the Mobile Connector, which is not the case for Model 3 or Y.

Did you already have a 14-50 outlet, or installed just to charge your car? Also, do you use the evdance unit because it gives you 40A or any other reason?

Great. One more "yes" for Mobile Connector.

I am inclined to believe that all CTs come with Mobile Connector, and in few cases where people didn't receive one with their CT, it's probably because it was removed by someone at the delivery point.

Disclaimer - I'm not an electrician so please consult with one before installing or make sure you thoroughly understand the NEC/NFPA 70 and your local electrical codes.

That said, you can use 8 AWG wiring with a Wall Connector, but during commissioning you will need to de-rate the Wall Connector's output to 32-40A max, depending on your installation, cable type, length, and breaker size. Again, if you are unsure, please consult with a licensed electrician.

If the 125' 8 AWG cable you bought is "Romex" NM-B, it is rated for a 40A breaker, or pulling 32A max from your Wall Connector.

EDIT: to answer your first question, my wire was 6/2, THHN.
