When I park in my driveway, I tried to park as close to the fence as possible so that my wife can get her car in and not give me shit about it.

The model s, it's always been pretty easy and I guess I'm not yet used to the truck even though I've had it for a month.

So today, I got a little too close to the fence and boy did it mess up the truck. We're not talking about running into the fence directly but trying to back up and then I got a little too close and then one of the panels got caught in the post and it really messed up the post but it bent as well. Check out the pictures.

Bear in mind that this is parking speeds, very low speed. Judging from the post, that's some serious damage so if this were a person, they'd be pretty messed up.

I tried to bend that panel back with my hands and it's impossible. I tried to pliers and it's impossible.

There's this dude that happens to have a body shop across the street from the co-working space where I go to and I'm going to go and see if he can bend it back in place enough to make it look normal again.

You know this happens because of all 4 wheels steering ... we are all use to front steer only, the rear steer literally shifts the truck side ways in exponential degree which you dont imagine ,,I have EXACT same occurrence ... trying to create room on other side to let wife park , scanning all mirrors camera at parking speed to realize I was like 1 mm close to hitting in exact same spot ... before scanning all mirrors I was like 4-5 inches away ... but in a matter of 2-3 seconds at parking speed that 4-5 inches became 1 mm .... was close escape ...

If people are finding it hard to notice, I'd recommend putting something bright on it until you get it fixed.

You might decapitate a walker by.
You must walk funny

It's practically a lost skill, but an aircraft sheet metal guy with an English wheel could make that piece look like new in a half hour.
Aircraft aluminum is far more malleable than HFS.

Very true. But the presence of the bend from the accident effectively shows the bending of the HFS.

Maybe I am wrong - the simple test would be to try it. If heat treatment was required to get a uniform flat result, it takes an entirely different type of shop and perhaps becomes impractical.

Then again, specialized shops could spring up that do nothing but bend CT panels back into shape.

First, it would probably take longer than that just to remove the panel, second, and more importantly, it's not just a single layer of steel, it's bonded to another sub panel, I think you can see some of the adhesive left on the SS from where it peeled away from the underlying panel. Bottom line is you can't run that through an English wheel.

Sorry to see that damage...After reading the discussion about the 4-wheel steering and how that can get us in trouble pretty quick when parking, maybe a future software update could include a "turn off 4-wheel steering" mode...

Actually, tbh, it's more about getting used to it. I wouldn't turn it off. This is a new vehicle error that I committed. It's sad.

Exactly my thought. Maybe a future software upgrade.

Our even be smarter it should know how far away at is and even keep you from hitting it by changing the steering angle. Good thing about our Tesla's they do get better over time.

You can turn it off in Off Road Mode, but that's a bit of a pain to get to when you want to park quickly, haha!!
