FSD still follows the laws of physics. If there isnt enough time to stop nothing can be done. There are videos out there showing FSDs reaction to animals is minimal. That might be a good thing for the drivers safety.

Here is a video of FSD applying the brakes, it might have saved the deer.

FSD will stop or slow for animals in the road, but it will not discomfort the passengers to do so. It'll only jam on the brakes for what it perceives as human.

will/can FSD prevent the encounter?
No way! That was way to quick of an encounter for any AI calculate and respond without compromising any other assets such as the other incoming videos. My reaction would've been the same to carry on with the impact with the deer. Deviating from the deer means more damage vs other vehicles.

Thoughts?

All teslas are supposed to have Automatic Emergency Breaking as part of the Collision Avoidance Assist. I had it activate once on the highway in my MX. Did that kick in at all?

Was not using TACC.. just me driving like a normal car and there was not any intervention from the vehicle. It happened so quickly even if it would have applied the brakes the damage would have been done and could have risked an accident.

That saved my bacon on a road trip once in my MX. Stop and go traffic on a highway then it cleared up and people sped up to 50ish ... then all of a sudden the cars in front of me were at a nearly dead stop as all cars were suddenly braking. AEB kicked on and braked hard. It reacted faster than I could as it took me a second realize what was going on.

I hit a deer this evening on my way home. It was a small Deer maybe 50 lbs going 45 Mph.. Truck is still drivable but frunk and lower front plastic took a beating! Just one Month Old and made the first payment today ! Oh well things can be fixed but just hate it when things like this happen. The deer was dead on impact so that was semi positive as it wasn’t injured and in pain. Can’t wait to see how long this takes to get fixed! This could be the First Cybertruck Deer Hit ever!

A week after i got mine i hit a black bear. Prob 350lbs , i was going 60 and and the area is heavily forested on both sides of the road. It dashed out of the right side i hit full on. It felt like i did major damage. The truck shook. I felt it go under the truck and it came out the left side. It was a solid hit to the truck. I pulled over and looked at the truck the only damage is saw was the plastic bumper had a big crack in it. I looked at the bear and it still alive. It crawled to the other side of the road and into the wooded area. It was clearly dying. It was a terrible experience.. I love animals so this was really hard on me. Tell you what. The CT is a freaking tank. The camera did not catch it because the bear came in low.

Wowza. Just never know what you’ll encounter on the road. Nice job keeping it straight on impact. I’m not sure what I would have done.

Negative.
Sometimes. It will see the motion from further away, it never blinks, never looks away, never needs to focus.

Defensive driving can prevent alot of these.

I avoided a possum last night by recognizing it along a guardrail, and slowed just enough that it had time to change its course before I got to it.

Yeah, I have hit animals - I like driving at night, and my current car is on the second rear bumper because a dog slammed into it from the side. Hard to dodge that!

But FSD is far more patient than humans can be.
